Grubišno Polje brings together an important Marian celebration, churches dating back to the 18th century, and a landscape of Ilova meadows and Bilogora forests. This means you can explore cultural history, events and time in nature as distinct focuses for a trip. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between sights in the town and activities in the wider area.

Cultural History and Traditions

Marinje began in 1900 as a parish festival for the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary. In the early 20th century, it developed into an important Marian celebration and pilgrimage in Bjelovar-Bilogora County. It is the parish's largest celebration and takes place on the Sunday after 12 September. If you would like to plan a trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year, as the specific program may change.

The Church of Saint George the Great Martyr was built between 1773 and 1775 and is protected as a historic monument. The Church of Saint Joseph was built in 1782. In addition, the Šuma Obrovi archaeological site comprises finds in Grubišno Polje and nearby Mala Peratovica. These include late medieval fortifications and an earlier church with a cemetery.

The Gradska knjižnica Mato Lovrak traces its roots to a reading room established in 1881, where residents read newspapers, magazines and books. Today, the library has a local history collection and spaces for cultural and educational programs, lectures and exhibitions. The Centar za kulturu i informiranje dr. Franjo Tuđman is the city's main cultural institution and hosts cultural and social events throughout the year. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the current dates in advance.

In the municipality, in Grbavac, the Etno kuća Bilogora offers a glimpse of rural life through old tools and authentic rooms, including a bedroom, a kitchen, a room by the attic entrance and a blacksmith's workshop. The institution preserves traditions passed down through generations. Its events include feather plucking, raising the Maypole and an old sports Olympics. The program may change; check the current dates if you are interested.

Landscape and Outdoor Activities

The area's character is shaped by preserved meadows along the Ilova and Bilogora forests, with abundant oak and beech trees. Rare or protected species associated with the area include white-tailed eagles, white and black storks, beavers and otters, as well as fritillaries, wild orchids and Siberian irises.

Activities in the area include leisurely walks, fishing in the Ilova and local sports ponds, and hunting in the surrounding forests. The approximately three-hectare Izletište Bara, surrounded by forest, adds to the options: it has two sports fishing ponds with walking paths, as well as courts for beach volleyball and small-sided football. Sports, cultural and entertainment events are also held there throughout the year. If you plan to use the paths or courts, or attend an event, check their condition or the current dates beforehand.

A county cycling route also passes through Grubišno Polje, connecting Bjelovar, Čazma, Garešnica, Daruvar and Grubišno Polje. The route offers a different perspective on the region's towns than a walk or a stay by the ponds. Signage and route maintenance may change; check the condition of the route before setting out.

Getting There and Regional Highlights

The D5 (E661) runs through Grubišno Polje, connecting the city to Virovitica and the Hungarian border to the north, and to Pakrac, Lipik and Stara Gradiška to the south.
