Ivan Meštrović was born in Vrpolje on 15 August 1883. The Ivan Meštrović Memorial Gallery opened there in 1972; as a specialised museum, it is dedicated to the artist. The permanent collection includes 35 sculptures and reliefs in plaster and bronze. The display may change. In the Municipality of Vrpolje, the sculptor’s birthplace is thus linked with a place dedicated to his work.

Church and Local History

The name Vrpolje already appears on a map of Slavonia dating from around 1500. Another point in time is the Church of St. John the Baptist: construction began in 1772 and was completed in 1774. The church is registered as protected cultural heritage; its protection status may be officially updated. Meštrović was baptised here, and four of his works are displayed in the church. The display of these works may change. The church building and a direct connection to the sculptor thus come together in the local history.

Archaeological Traces and Local Projects

Dobrevo, Glože and Veliko Polje are among the municipality’s registered protected archaeological sites; the corresponding protection designations may be officially updated. An archaeological park in Dobrevo adds to the theme: it includes an outdoor archaeology school. As the programme’s availability may vary, ask locally whether it is currently running. Dobrevo is also represented in the Eko-etno House: a permanent exhibition displays replicas of historical objects from the archaeological site. The exhibition content may be updated.

The Eko-etno project developed visitor services based on local products and included workshops intended to develop, improve and protect a local gastronomic product. Regional cuisine and product development thus stand alongside art and archaeology as distinct themes. Offers featuring local products and specific workshop programmes may change; ask locally for the latest information.

Landscape and Leisure

Land-use figures provide a concrete measure: agricultural land covers 73.5 percent of the municipality, while forests and wooded areas cover 11.27 percent. The Municipality of Vrpolje lies in the Sava Basin and the Biđ-Bosut drainage area. These figures show both the distribution of land and the municipality’s hydrogeographical setting.

Hunting is another listed leisure activity: the Municipality of Vrpolje is considered suitable for hunting and hunting tourism. Access to hunting is regulated and requires a local permit. Hunting lodges in Vrpolje, Stari Perkovci and Čajkovci are intended for hunting-related and other leisure activities; facilities and access may be subject to local arrangements.

Getting Around and Regional Hiking Examples

Two major railway lines, M104 and M303, cross the municipality. M104 is double-track and electrified, while M303 is single-track and also electrified; route designations and features may be officially updated. Bus services are considered underdeveloped. Check current bus connections before planning your journey.

In the wider destination of Brod-Posavina, designated hikes offer different time frames: the Strmac–Brezovo polje trail is 7.1 kilometres long and listed as a three-hour route. The circular trail around Lake Petnja covers 18.8 kilometres and takes five to six hours. The two regional options can therefore be compared by their stated length and duration.
