Several facets of cultural history come together in Slavonski Brod: the fortress combines historical significance with cultural institutions, while museums and memorial houses offer their own perspectives on art, literature and music. Fortress, Art and Baroque
The Brod Fortress is a major historical landmark in the center of Slavonski Brod, about a five-minute walk from the main square. Its cultural institutions include a tambura museum, traditional crafts exhibits and the Ružić Gallery. The fortress thus brings the city’s history, musical culture and visual arts together in one place.
The Ružić Gallery showcases contemporary art as well as the tradition of Croatian visual art. It does so through a permanent exhibition alongside temporary exhibitions. Art lovers will find both a permanent exhibition focus and a program featuring a variety of exhibitions.
The Franciscan Monastery offers a different architectural experience. From the main square, a riverside promenade along the Sava leads there in about a ten-minute walk. The monastery complex is Baroque in character, and the church interior features richly detailed Baroque decoration. The cloister is considered an important example of Baroque monastic architecture in Slavonia. The fortress and monastery therefore offer different points of interest: cultural institutions within a historic complex in one case, and the architecture of a monastery complex in the other.
Museums, Literature and Music
Muzej Brodskog Posavlja has departments devoted to natural sciences, archaeology, ethnography, cultural history, contemporary history and a gallery. Its subjects range from nature and early cultures to social history and art. The museum offers guided tours by prior arrangement and also sells museum publications and postcards. Spomen-dom Dragutin Tadijanović recreates the character of the rooms in the poet’s Zagreb apartment. Visitors can see authentic furniture and works of art, read the poet’s works and listen to audiovisual recitations of his poems. The visit thus combines a look at a recreated home environment with literature and spoken poetry.
Kuća Brlić is also part of the city’s literary heritage: its authentic historic interior is connected with the literary life of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. Together with Spomen-dom, it offers an engaging comparison between the historic home of the Brlić family and the memorial to poet Dragutin Tadijanović.
Kuća tambure – Slavonska notna bajka is dedicated to the tambura and the traditions of Slavonia. The interpretation center covers the instrument’s history, historic and modern tambura systems, tambura ensembles, its use in schools and the traditional culture of Slavonia. Visitors can also watch a tambura being made in the master workshop. The experience thus traces the instrument’s development through to its handcrafted production.
Activity and Relaxation along the Sava
For a different way to spend time in the city, Poloj Recreation Center is located on the Sava, three kilometers east of central Slavonski Brod. It has a sandy river beach, sports courts, public barbecue areas, children’s playgrounds and a designated swimming area. A 2.5-kilometer jogging and cycling path leads to the swimming area. Alongside cultural visits, you can therefore choose from waterside activities and ways to stay active.
Gradski Bazeni Vijuš has three indoor pools and one outdoor pool. The activities listed include swimming lessons, beginner training, synchronized swimming and recreational swimming. Poloj and the swimming pool offer different options: time by the river with a beach and sports areas, or swimming at a facility with indoor and outdoor pools.
