Postira combines a historic townscape with coastal scenery and hiking trails on Brač. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between exploring the town and taking longer routes across the island: they suit different time budgets and interests.
Streets and early Christian traces
As you walk through the old town, you will pass a small bridge, cobbled lanes and the parish church. Škarića dvori is home to “Pust me proć”, Postira’s narrowest street. The parish church of St John the Baptist was built in the mid-16th century on the remains of an early Christian basilica dating from the 5th–6th century. Postira’s other historic heritage includes the Lazanić family castle, where Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor (1876–1949) was born.
Lovrečina and the coastal landscape
In the wider destination of Općina Postira, three pebble beaches and one sandy beach stretch for about three kilometres along the centre of Postira. East of Postira lies Lovrečina, the largest sandy bay on the island of Brač. The sandy bay continues inland as cultivated landscape, offering a different coastal setting from the beaches in the town centre.
Lovrečina is home to an archaeological site featuring the 5th-century Basilica of St Lawrence. The early Christian church has a well-preserved cruciform baptismal font. Visitors interested in coastal landscapes and early church history can experience both in one place.
Hiking on Brač
The Via Brattia is a circular tourist and hiking route about 140 kilometres long that passes through Postira. It is marked in both directions, and you can start the route in Postira. Check the markings and trail conditions before setting out.
In the wider destination of Općina Postira, the Postira–Vidova gora–Bol trail connects the north and south of Brač. It is 21 kilometres long and takes about 6.5 hours to walk; the route and walking time may vary depending on conditions. Vidova Gora is the highest peak on Brač and among the Croatian islands. From there, views extend to the islands of central and southern Dalmatia, as well as the Golden Horn. The Via Brattia is designated as a long circular route, while an approximate walking time is also available for the route to Bol.
Another kind of journey is the Good Friday procession, which follows a 5.5-kilometre penitential route and is led by a cross-bearer carrying a 30-kilogram cross. The Good Friday route can be walked throughout the year; the procession itself takes place on Good Friday.
Events and activities
The Olive Picking World Championship has been held in Postira since 2017, in October. The programme includes olive-picking competitions and quizzes about olive cultivation, as well as tastings, excursions and evenings of entertainment. Individual programme items may vary from year to year. Check the dates and programme for the relevant year before your trip.
In the wider destination of Općina Postira, Postirsko ljeto is one of the traditional cultural and entertainment events. It includes, among other things, celebrations for St John the Baptist, Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Assumption of Mary. If you plan to attend one of these events, check the dates for the relevant year.
Postira’s central sports centre has two natural-grass football pitches, two tennis courts, a cageball pitch and a bocce court. Advance registration, reservation and payment are required to use the facilities. Boat trips to hidden coves and beaches around the island of Brač are also available from Postira; check the specific offers and routes for your travel dates.
Dol and Brač’s cuisine
In the wider destination of Općina Postira lies Dol, a picturesque medieval village with around a hundred residents. There are around thirty natural shallow caves, and a tradition of church folk singing dating back more than 400 years is also preserved there. Hrapoćuša from Dol is a traditional dish from the island of Brač. The skills involved in making it have been included on the Croatian Ministry of Culture’s list of protected cultural heritage. Brač’s olive oil is also part of the region’s culinary identity: it received a European designation of origin in 2022.
