San Marcos offers two distinct ways to experience a stay: in the town center, the Escuela León Cortés Castro and the Unidad Sanitaria San Marcos draw attention to their year of construction, building materials, and architectural forms; in the mountains of San Marcos de Tarrazú, Tierra Amiga focuses on the journey of coffee from cultivation to cup. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you are primarily interested in architecture or in learning about an agricultural production process.

Architecture in the town center

The Escuela León Cortés Castro in the center of San Marcos de Tarrazú was built in 1928 by architect José María Barrantes using reinforced concrete. It continues to serve as a community school. Visits are limited to the building’s exterior; do not plan an interior visit, and check local access conditions in advance. Its year of construction, architect, and building material provide concrete points of reference for viewing the exterior: the façade can be seen both as part of a school building that is still in use and as a work from 1928. This means the focus is not only on the design, but also on the building’s historical context.

The Unidad Sanitaria San Marcos in the town center has a different architectural character: the building features Neo-Colonial architecture and an H-shaped floor plan, and is predominantly made of brick. Several alterations have changed its original design. When viewing it, it helps to distinguish between its features: the style describes its architectural classification, the H-shape its floor plan, and brick the main building material. The floor plan and building material describe different aspects of the building; the alterations add another perspective by showing how its original design has changed. Taken together, these offer two distinct points of view: at the Escuela, the year of construction, architect, and reinforced concrete are helpful reference points; at the Unidad, the style, floor plan, brick, and alterations draw the eye.

Coffee production in the mountains

Another highlight lies in the mountains of San Marcos de Tarrazú. A report from September 2026 describes a tour of the coffee farm at Tierra Amiga, where visitors learn about the production process from cultivation to cup. According to the report, the experience had been offered for eight years at that time. The focus here is on the agricultural production process, while the buildings in the town center are explored through their architecture. Those interested in how coffee is made will find a different way to experience San Marcos than by exploring its architectural forms and building materials.

Choose the right focus for your accommodation search

First, consider whether the architecture in the town center or a visit to the coffee farm in the mountains should shape your stay. When comparing hotels in San Marcos, pay attention to their locations and the conditions listed. This helps you tailor your search to your actual interests for the trip, rather than assuming that a particular accommodation location will suit you based solely on the general destination.
