Parque Nacional Isla del Coco lies 550 km off Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and is the only island in the tropical eastern Pacific with tropical rainforest. This remote rainforest island adds a distinctive natural highlight to Puntarenas, where coastlines, mangroves and forest areas also shape travel experiences. In Costa Rica, Parque Nacional Isla del Coco was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Island History and Sea Routes
Parque Nacional Isla San Lucas is designated as a historic-architectural heritage site and a zone for sustainable tourism use. A visit begins with an important practical distinction: the park is accessible only by sea. Transport and tour services generally depart from the Muelle TurĂstico del ICT in El Carmen, also in Puntarenas Province. As provider arrangements and reservations may change, it is a good idea to check the services and reservation terms in advance.
Forest Areas and Hiking Trails
In the north of Puntarenas Province, on the Nicoya Peninsula and south of Montezuma, lies Reserva Natural de Cabo Blanco. It protects 1,269 hectares of land and 1,790 hectares of marine area. Three hiking trails offer different distances: a 2 km loop, a 1 km trail specifically for older adults and children, and a 10 km trail to Cabo Blanco. Their routes can therefore be distinguished by length, while retaining the stated intended audience of the shorter trail.
Cabo Blanco is also a well-known destination for birdwatchers. Bird groups found there include frigatebirds, gulls and pelicans. Southeast of Orotina lies Parque Nacional de Carara: it covers 4,700 hectares and is home to three different forest types. The two protected areas offer different points of interest for nature lovers: Cabo Blanco is known for its named hiking trails and birdwatching, while Carara is characterized by its three forest types.
Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Curú is located in the Gulf of Nicoya. It extends from Punta Quesera to Punta Curú. At Playa de Curú, you can swim and observe the flora and fauna. Curú therefore combines the protected area’s geographic extent with specific activities at a named beach.
Sea, Mangroves and Coastal Experiences
In Osa Canton, whale-watching tours to see humpback whales are offered near Parque Nacional Marino Ballena. Boat trips through the Térraba-Sierpe mangroves are also offered in Osa. These experiences have different focuses: one involves observing marine mammals, while the other takes you through a mangrove area.
Bioluminescence can be observed at some beaches in Puntarenas Province and in the Gulf of Nicoya. Whether it is visible depends on conditions and the location. At Playa Hermosa de Garabito, surfing takes center stage: the beach was designated a World Surf Reserve, the first in Central America and the eleventh worldwide. Nature observation and surf history thus offer different coastal themes, without being tied to the same place.
Practical Information for Puntarenas
The city of Puntarenas has a ferry terminal connected to Paquera and CĂłbano across the Gulf of Nicoya. If you plan to use this connection, check the schedule before setting out. The ferry service is a practical point of reference for planning; it does not replace the separate need to check services and reservation terms for Isla San Lucas.
The seafood cuisine is also recommended as a visitor experience in Puntarenas. When planning, you can weigh the different types of activities: Cabo Blanco has hiking trails with stated distances, while Osa offers boat trips through mangroves. Along with the other coastal experiences, birdwatching and protected areas, these provide a range of themes to help you plan your trip and search for suitable accommodation.
