The canton of Heredia offers two distinct perspectives: architectural history and cultural offerings in the city of Heredia, and natural landscapes and access to parks in the district of Vara Blanca. The following places and activities show the different ways you can spend time in the region.
Culture and architectural history in Heredia
The Monumento Nacional Casa Alfredo González Flores is located in the former home of President Alfredo González Flores and was declared a national monument in 1974. The house hosts exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and theater and dance performances. The exhibition “Alfredo González Flores (1877–1962). Vida y legado de un ilustre ex presidente” is permanently free and open to the public.
The Iglesia de la Inmaculada ConcepciĂłn was elevated to parish status in 1736 and is considered the only large colonial building still standing in the Central Valley. The Liceo de Heredia is among the canton’s most outstanding heritage-listed buildings and is considered a symbol of the province’s history and social development. El FortĂn can also be included in your visit: Admission is free, and no registration or reservation is required. Check the latest visitor information before your visit. Most of Heredia’s architectural heritage is located in the district known as the casco central; this concentration makes it easier to visit and learn about the heritage sites.
The Centro Cultural Herediano Omar Dengo provides the Heredian community with eight halls and an amphitheater. The spaces are used for sculpture, visual arts, photography, and handicrafts, as well as folk dance, performing arts, dance, music, and literature.
Themed walking tours
Heredia’s tourism office, in collaboration with institutions, offers guided tours of the Historic Center for delegations, educational institutions, and organized groups. The municipal Centro HistĂłrico tour visits key historic buildings, including Parque Central, El FortĂn, and Casa Alfredo González Flores. Templos Heredianos visits the main Catholic churches in the first district, including Parroquia Inmaculada ConcepciĂłn and Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The Sector Sur tour explores the history and culture of southern Heredia and includes Mercado Florense, the train station, the municipal cemetery, and neighborhood parks and churches.
Market and religious traditions
Heredia’s Mercado Municipal has served as a center of commercial exchange from the 19th century to the present day. The Gastronómico en el Mercado tour uses the market to explore local cuisine and discover its vibrant history.
At the Heredia cemetery, Catholic visitors seek out the mausoleum of Niña Marisa to ask for miracles or give thanks for miracles granted. This religious tradition has existed since the 1950s. In San Rafael de Vara Blanca, the Capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe is used only once a year, on the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Nature and rural tourism in Vara Blanca
The district of Vara Blanca in the canton of Heredia features natural landscapes with freshwater streams and waterfalls. Vara Blanca is also an access point to Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, Parque Nacional Volcán Barva, and Parque Nacional Volcán Poás. Parque Nacional Volcán Barva has four visitor trails. One of them is Sendero Mirador Varablanca: the round trip is listed as taking 50 minutes, and the trail offers panoramic views. Check current park conditions before your visit.
The old church of Vara Blanca was damaged by the Cinchona earthquake; a new church had to be built alongside it. The old church has historical significance. The Feria de las Fresas is held in Vara Blanca every April. Visits to dairy farms are among the rural tourism activities available there. As the schedules of individual farms may vary, check specific visiting options in advance.
Plan your stay around your interests
When choosing a base for your accommodation, it helps to sort your planned activities: historic buildings, the market, and walking tours offer a different focus from waterfalls, park access, and rural visits in Vara Blanca. Consider which of these themes will shape your trip, then use them to guide your search for hotels in Heredia.
