La Cruz can be combined with nature experiences in the nearby area and the wider region for a trip. A clearly located destination is Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Bahía Junquillal: the protected area covers 505 hectares and is 16 kilometers from La Cruz and four kilometers from Cuajiniquil. Cuajiniquil is therefore the nearer of the two points of reference mentioned. The trails and beach at the refuge should be distinguished from activities mentioned for the wider coastal corridor.
Trails and beach in the protected area
In addition to its three trails, the refuge includes a two-kilometer beach as well as designated camping and day-use areas. The nature trails are therefore one part of the activities described in the protected area; the beach and designated areas offer additional focal points for your stay.
The three trails in the refuge differ in length and layout. El Carao is a 600-meter loop that passes through dry forest. Estero Seco is an 800-meter linear loop; La Laguna is a semi-linear loop that is also 800 meters long. All three trails are suitable for all visitor groups. At 600 meters, El Carao is the shortest trail; Estero Seco and La Laguna are the same length. Each of the two longer trails is 200 meters longer than El Carao.
The wildlife mentioned for observation also varies. Birds and mammals, among other species, can be observed on El Carao; the same is true of La Laguna. At Estero Seco, possible sightings include crabs, raccoons, hawks, and fish, in addition to birds and mammals. You can therefore distinguish between the trails not only by length but also by the groups of animals mentioned for each. El Carao also combines wildlife-watching opportunities with a trail through dry forest.
Birdwatching and kitesurfing in the wider area
Birdwatching is also a feature of the wider region. The Corredor Turístico Costero La Cruz promotes it as one of its main attractions and names more than 200 bird species that can be observed in the area's habitats: primary and secondary tropical dry forest, mangroves, open areas, and marine environments. The mix of habitats therefore ranges from different types of forest to mangroves and open and marine areas. If you would like to go birdwatching beyond the trails in the refuge, you can also include the wider coastal corridor in your travel plans.
Kitesurfing is another regional specialty. The beaches of La Cruz canton are promoted for this activity; several kitesurfing academies offer lessons for beginners and experienced kitesurfers. This means there are different interests to choose from in the wider area: nature observation and trails in the protected area, as well as watersports on the canton's beaches. Let your choice be guided by which of these activities is a priority for your trip.
Lookout and monthly market
The Corredor Turístico Costero La Cruz also recommends a visit to Mirador de Junquillal. According to the description, the Mercadito Playero Sostenible is held once a month in the refuge. Check the current date before visiting. A lookout point and a recurring market thus offer additional reasons for an outing, alongside the nature trails, birdwatching, and watersports.
