María Auxiliadora is located in Barroeta, Jesús, Atenas. Construction of the María Auxiliadora Temple began at the end of January 2007 and took approximately a year and a half. A preserved section of the Camino de cascote de piedra (Alto del Monte) runs in the vicinity of the destination between the localities of Alto del Monte in Atenas and Desmonte in San Mateo. The two place references differ in scale: the construction history belongs to Barroeta, while the preserved road section runs between two other localities.
Culture and architecture in the wider destination of Alajuela
In the wider destination of Alajuela, the Museo Histórico Cultural Juan Santamaría offers a glimpse into the history of the city of Alajuela. The museum occupies the city’s former barracks and former prison; both buildings are considered to be of heritage interest. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are on display. The weapons collection includes firearms, bladed weapons, ammunition, and accessories, mostly from the second half of the 19th century. The objects on display may vary depending on the exhibition.
A different museum focus can be found at the Museo Regional de San Ramón: it is housed in the former town hall, built in 1878 and declared architectural and cultural heritage in 1982. The museum’s rooms include spaces for temporary exhibitions, children’s and young adult literature, regional literature and identities, and natural history. As museum facilities may be reorganized, check the current layout when planning a specific visit.
Sarchí is considered the birthplace of traditional crafts and a destination where this craft can be seen. A historic hand-painted church with wooden details stands in the central park. Another cultural highlight is the monumental ox cart: it is four meters high, six meters long, and decorated in bright colors. In Grecia, the Templo Metálico Las Mercedes was built in 1897. It is considered an architectural jewel and symbolizes a period of great prosperity and iron construction at the beginning of Tomás Guardia’s liberal regime.
Volcanic landscapes and trails in Alajuela
Nature in the wider destination of Alajuela ranges from named hiking trails to volcanic landforms. In Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal, the Heliconias, Coladas, Tucanes, and Los Miradores trails pass sites where visitors can observe much of the park’s flora and fauna, as well as remnants of lava flows. Check trail conditions before your trip. Parque Nacional Volcán Poás offers a different geological feature: the volcano reaches 2,708 meters above sea level. Two craters lie at its summit, including the main crater, which is 1.5 kilometers wide and 300 meters deep; Laguna Botos is fed exclusively by rainwater.
Wetlands and regional nature
Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro is a Ramsar site of global importance for wetland conservation. Animals in its wetland habitat include jabirus, caimans, and turtles. The wetlands of Bosque Alegre offer a different nature and activity focus: fishing, kayaking, camping, hiking, and swimming are possible there; specific activities may depend on local conditions and management rules. The trailhead to the wetlands can be reached by car or four-wheel-drive vehicle: take Route 126 to Cariblanco, then continue 7.5 kilometers toward Los Ángeles Sur. Road conditions can change, particularly in wet weather.
Laguna Hule is the largest of the three wetlands of Bosque Alegre and has a lookout point. It is 1,150 meters wide and more than 26 meters deep. The surrounding area is home to armadillos, white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys, and 170 bird species. Alajuela thus brings together different nature experiences: observations along named park trails, volcanic features, and wetlands with their own activity options and conditions.
