On Rarotonga, hiking trails, Muri Lagoon and cultural discoveries offer different ways to get to know the island.

Hikes for different experience levels

The Cross Island Trek runs from north to south across Rarotonga, passing Te Rua Manga, also known as The Needle. It is rated moderate to difficult, is 6 km long and takes an average of 3 to 3.5 hours. The southern starting point or endpoint is at Wigmores Waterfall, at the end of Papua Road on the south side of the island.

At 3.1 km for the return trip, the moderately rated Raemaru Trek is shorter; its average duration is 90 minutes. Reaching the summit involves a 15 m rock-climbing section. The two hikes therefore differ in their stated duration, difficulty rating and described route section. Route conditions and estimated times for both can change. Maunga Tours offers a fully guided tour on the Cross Island Trek; check current availability with the provider.

Muri Lagoon: swimming, kayaking and snorkelling

At Muri Lagoon, you can swim or kayak to the small island in front of Nautilus Resort Rarotonga. Snorkelling providers there include Captain Tama's Lagoon Cruizes & Aquasportz and Koka Lagoon Cruises. On snorkelling trips, guests may see giant clams and large schools of tropical fish; sightings are not guaranteed. Local sea conditions can vary, and operators' offerings may change. Check that they are currently operating before booking.

Churches, history and cultural sites

Cook Islands Christian Churches (CICC) are spread across Rarotonga. Exploring them can help visitors learn more about their origins with the London Missionary Society (LMS) and about community figures who helped spread the Christian faith on the island. The churches are built from white coral stone and limestone; services are held there on Sundays.

Visitors are welcome at Sunday services on Rarotonga. Recommended attire for men is shirts and long trousers; women are advised to wear longer skirts or dresses, and to cover their shoulders if possible. Takamoa Theological College was completed in 1843 and was the first theological college founded by the LMS in the South Pacific. Tuoro, also called Black Rock, is culturally significant to the people of the Cook Islands and is connected to their ancestral land, Avaiki.

Markets and evening performances

Punanga Nui Market in Avarua offers free entertainment as well as stalls selling fresh produce and organic coffee. Souvenirs available there include pearls, artworks, handicrafts and hats made from coconut fronds. Offerings may vary.

Muri Night Market in Ngatangiia serves food from food trucks and stalls, including local barbecue, seafood, fresh drinking coconuts, curries, stir-fried noodles, pizza and desserts. The selection of vendors may change. Rarotonga also has Island Nights; weekly evening performances, including fire dancing shows, take place on the Cook Islands. Check dates and availability before your visit.

Getting around the island

One main road runs around Rarotonga; there are no traffic lights along it, and it has two roundabouts. Two buses circle the island: one runs clockwise and the other counterclockwise. They stop along the main road when hailed. Confirm current bus details locally; road layouts can also change.
