Fonseca can be understood through two specific points of reference: the Río Ranchería runs through the town center, while the Festival del Retorno and the themes explored at the Museo Nacional del Vallenato reflect different aspects of the town’s culture. When planning your trip, these points of reference should be considered separately: the river describes the town’s central location, while the festival dates relate to a specific edition. The festival and museum add communal history, dance, and knowledge of musical instruments to this geographical perspective.
Festival del Retorno: Occasion and Tradition
The Festival del Retorno began in 1972. A group of Fonseca residents initiated the festival to celebrate coming together and reuniting with relatives and friends who had left their hometown. The name therefore has a specific social meaning: at its heart was the desire to meet across geographic distances.
The 48th edition took place from August 25 to 28, 2022, in honor of Luis Enrique “el Pollo Vallenato” Martínez Argote. The program included dances, a serenade, accordion and Piqueria competitions, and Vallenato concerts. These program items belong to that edition of the festival and offer a specific glimpse into that year’s event.
The dance “la colita abierta y la colita cerrá” is considered a traditional dance of Fonseca and is performed every year at the Festival del Retorno. This highlights a distinction in timing: the festival dates mentioned relate specifically to the 2022 edition, whereas the dance performance is described as a recurring annual tradition. This makes it possible to distinguish a single historical edition from a recurring part of the festival.
Vallenato at the Museum
A presentation at the Museo Nacional del Vallenato in Fonseca, described in 2022, lists the caja, guacharaca, and accordion as Vallenato’s three main instruments. The presentation includes accordions with two and three keyboards; the two-row accordion is associated with the era of Luis Enrique Martínez.
The exhibition described in 2022 also includes a room with pre-Hispanic artifacts found on the grounds of the Universidad de La Guajira and dating back approximately two thousand years. Another room recreates a time when Fonseca did not yet have electricity. Its furnishings include a folding or camp bed, a latrine, and a Calambuco. Together, the described rooms move from music and instruments to artifacts and a depiction of earlier living conditions.
Town Landmarks and Cultural Events
The Río Ranchería runs through the center of Fonseca, adding a geographical perspective to the cultural themes. While the festival dates relate to a specific edition, the river represents a geographical feature of the town. This distinction helps to consider the time-specific festival information separately from Fonseca’s location.
Casa Museo La Provinciana is also part of the town’s history: in 2015, the council declared it part of Fonseca’s historical and cultural heritage. Fonseca’s patron saint festivities are associated with the parish of San Agustín and are celebrated on August 28. The cultural picture thus extends beyond Vallenato: it includes both a specific heritage designation and a festival date associated with the parish.
