San Jos de Isnos can be viewed on two levels: the town itself and the destinations in the municipality. Parque Principal is in the town; archaeological and scenic destinations take you beyond the town center. This lets you consider the destinations that interest you separately when planning your trip.

Culture in the Town

Parque Principal de Isnos was built between 1931 and 1936. Its construction period provides a clear cultural and historical point of interest within the town. This distinguishes the park from the archaeological destinations in the municipality: here, the focus is on the construction of a park, while there, it is on the spatial layout of an archaeological site. If you want to experience culture beyond the archaeological sites, Parque Principal offers a distinct connection to the town.

Archaeology in the Municipality

Parque Arqueológico Alto de los Ídolos is in the municipality of Isnos, outside the town center. The site includes seven burial mounds on a natural horseshoe-shaped hill that was leveled by a large artificial terrace. The natural landform and artificial leveling thus form a shared spatial composition, with the seven burial mounds adding another clearly countable element. Those interested in archaeological sites can observe both the arrangement of the burial mounds and the contrast between the hill and the terrace.

The park is managed by the Instituto Colombiano de Antropología e Historia (ICANH) and has infrastructure for public visits. Check the operator’s visitor information before traveling.

Waterfalls and Visiting Conditions

The waterfall on Quebrada Negra forms Cascada del Duende, which is approximately 25 meters high. A route from Isnos leads there along a path across private property. Before visiting, check whether access is possible; this way, you can take the visiting conditions into account while planning.

Salto de Bordones is 370 meters high and surrounded by Andean forest vegetation. It marks the boundary with Saladoblanco and lies along a route from Isnos. Swimming and recreation are not possible at the foot of the waterfall.

The two waterfalls differ in one directly comparable feature: Cascada del Duende is approximately 25 meters high, while Salto de Bordones is 370 meters high. Their visiting conditions also differ: the path to the Cascada crosses private property, while swimming and recreation are not possible at the foot of the Salto. Height and access therefore provide a more concrete basis for choosing between them than their shared designation as waterfalls.
