Simijacá brings together diverse natural features, local traditions, and cultural landmarks. The municipality offers everything from waterfalls and streams to a lagoon steeped in legends, a Stations of the Cross route, and rural competitions. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether the landscape, stories, or local culture will shape your stay.

Natural features in the municipality

Chorro de San Juanito is a waterfall in the Cristales sector, cascading down from Cerro de la Cruz. At Cueva Negra, between the rural districts of Aposentos and Don Lope, a stream plunges more than 40 meters; a creek there forms natural slides suitable for recreation. The two natural sites offer distinct experiences: the waterfall is the defining feature at Chorro, while Cueva Negra combines a deep stream with natural slides. At Cerro de Carguata in the Salitre rural district, small erosion channels and streams can be seen. The small channels at Cerro de Carguata are on a different scale from the stream more than 40 meters deep at Cueva Negra: here, small-scale landforms are the defining feature, while there, it is the change in elevation.

Lagoon, traditions, and rural culture

Laguna del Colorado, also known as Laguna Encantada, is located near Las Lajas. Legends about golden ducks and chickens, as well as past Indigenous rituals, are associated with it. These are distinct cultural layers: the legends belong to the storytelling tradition, while the rituals refer to past Indigenous practices. Agustín Parra donated his property to help establish the community. The Alto de la Cruz has Stations of the Cross and a summit cross. By contrast, Chorro de San Juanito cascades down from Cerro de la Cruz. The similar-sounding names therefore refer to different landmarks: the Stations of the Cross and summit cross are at Alto, while the waterfall is at Cerro. The 2024 Festival de la Mazorca included the Juegos Autóctonos Campesinos, with competitions in potato peeling and wood chopping, as well as other rural games. The Stations and summit cross at Alto are local landmarks, while the competitions took place as part of a specific festival year.
