El Colegio can be explored through three distinct points of reference: the municipality’s cultural history, destinations in the surrounding area, and the broader travel destination of Cundinamarca. For travel planning, it helps to consider these levels separately. The petroglyphs and Laguna La Junça are in the vicinity of El Colegio; Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza is a distinct natural area within Cundinamarca.
Landscape and Nearby Destinations
The Distrito de Manejo Integrado Cuchilla de Peñas Blancas y del Subia is located in the Department of Cundinamarca, in the eastern highlands of the municipalities of San Antonio del Tequendama, El Colegio, and Viotá. The protected area is therefore associated with the highlands of three municipalities; El Colegio is part of this geographical context. Consequently, the protected landscape should not be understood solely as a feature of the town center.
Laguna La Junça is located near El Colegio and is a destination to visit. A petroglyph site is located in the Vereda Santa Isabel, about 3 kilometers from El Colegio. The rock art includes spiral figures, which legend says are attributed the meaning “Evolution.” Thus, different topics are found in the nearby area: the lagoon as a destination to visit and the site with its traditional interpretation.
Festival History in El Colegio
The Festival Internacional de Teatro Callejero was founded in 1999 and became an important part of the cultural identity of the municipality of El Colegio. Its history adds a cultural perspective on the place to its landscape-related appeal. The last edition took place in 2022. So, when planning a future visit, consider the festival part of the area’s cultural history, rather than a current event date to plan around.
Natural Areas in the Broader Travel Destination of Cundinamarca
Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza is a distinct regional natural area in Cundinamarca. It is a refuge for Andean flora and fauna. Páramos are most commonly observed in the western part of the park, followed by Andean and high-Andean forests.
Parque Nacional Natural Chingaza has seven hiking trails: De los Sentidos, Suasie, Laguna Seca, Plantas del Camino-Laguna de Chingaza, Lagunas de Siecha, Cuchillas de Siecha, and Lagunas de Buitrago. Of these, De los Sentidos is designated as accessible. If you include this regional natural area in your plans, the list provides specific trail names and one designated feature for a trail.
There are no public transport services to the park. Access is possible only by private or rental vehicle, such as a car, bus, minibus, or van. Before setting out, check how you can arrange this journey by vehicle.
The Sistema Lacustre de Chingaza is also part of the regional conservation context. An area of 4,058 hectares is protected under the Ramsar Convention and is listed as a wetland of international importance. Its importance as a habitat for waterbirds is particularly emphasized. The designation was made by Decree No. 233 of 2008. Together with the ecosystems observed in the western part of the park, this conservation context offers another perspective on Cundinamarca’s natural features.
