History and culture in specific places
Valparaíso Province encompasses everything from a historic port district to an archipelago of three islands. The historic quarter of the port city of Valparaíso is an exceptional example of industrial heritage associated with international maritime trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Casa Museo La Sebastiana is also in Valparaíso, on Cerro Florida.
In Viña del Mar, museums offer further insights into art and design. Palacio Vergara is home to the Museo de Bellas Artes. Museo Palacio Rioja displays finely crafted furniture from Spain and France, associated with the Baroque, Rococo and Chesterfield styles. The region thus brings together distinct cultural highlights: maritime trade heritage in Valparaíso and collections in Viña del Mar.
Quinta Vergara offers a free cultural and recreational experience. Its amphitheater hosts the Festival Internacional de la Canción every February. If you choose to travel for the festival, check the event dates in advance; you should also confirm operational details about Quinta Vergara before your visit.
Dunes, birdlife and trails
The dune systems of Punta de Concón are scenic and also bear witness to the development of central Chile’s coastal landscape. For those who want to experience the landscape as more than just a backdrop, they offer a geological and scenic context that goes beyond a single view.
Reserva Nacional Lago Peñuelas has been part of the La Campana-Peñuelas Biosphere Reserve since February 15, 1985. It is an important bird concentration area and is home to 120 bird species. Cyclists can take the Ciclorruta Familiar, which has three loop routes of varying lengths and difficulty levels. Check the latest route information before your trip.
You can also explore Jardín Botánico Nacional de Viña del Mar via its trails: it has a walking path within the garden and a trekking trail with access to Lote C. The two trail options therefore differ in their relation to the garden and Lote C. When planning, you can consider which type of trail interests you.
Island archipelago and vineyards
The archipelago consists of the three islands of Robinson Crusoe, Santa Clara and Alejandro Selkirk. In Parque Nacional Archipiélago Juan Fernández, the 3.5-kilometer Sendero Mirador de Selkirk takes two to three hours in total. This gives you a specific timeframe for the hike; check current trail conditions before setting out.
Outdoor activities in Valle de Casablanca include trekking and cycling through the vineyards. The roads also help you find your way: Ruta 68 connects the main access routes to Valle de Casablanca, while F-90 leads to smaller vineyards. If you plan to go trekking or cycling, check specific routes and participation requirements locally.
