Quintero brings together cultural history, guided town and beach walks, and coastal scenery on different scales. Casa Museo Downey conveys the Downey family heritage and the work of Juan Downey; other guided experiences focus on historic sites, beaches, local legends or literature. Quintero’s maritime attractions include the Cristo Sumergido at a depth of twelve metres and Playa Los Enamorados, while the rural part of the municipality has its own natural focal point in Humedal de Mantagua. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on cultural sites, a guided walk or nature. These different themes can help you choose the focus of your visit.

Cultural Sites and Architectural History

Casa Museo Downey is a cultural space open to the entire community. It conveys the Downey family heritage and the work of Juan Downey. The building was constructed in Quintero in 1935 for the family’s summer stays and was later converted into a museum. On the exterior, a spiral staircase leads to the rooftop terrace, which looks out over the sea. The house thus brings together its former use as a summer residence, its later function as a museum and a striking architectural detail. This makes Casa Museo a point of interest both for art lovers and for travellers interested in Quintero’s architectural history.

Casa Estación was designed by Juan Rau and houses Quintero’s Municipal Culture and Tourism Corporation. The grounds of Parque Municipal Luisa Sebiré de Cousiño offer another historical connection: benefactor Luisa Sebiré de Cousiño donated the land in 1943. The two houses have different points of emphasis: Casa Museo foregrounds the family heritage and Juan Downey’s work, while Casa Estación highlights Juan Rau’s design and the municipal Culture and Tourism Corporation. This lets you consider the cultural sites in terms of their respective connections to art, architecture, or municipal cultural and tourism work.

Guided Walks with Different Themes

The Circuito Turístico Quintero Urbano is a guided historical walk taking in Casa Estación, Puntilla de Sanfuentes, Cueva del Pirata and Parque Municipal Luisa Sebiré de Cousiño. It connects several named stops in Quintero. The Ruta de Playas has a different focus: this guided walk visits Quintero’s beaches, including El Durazno, El Caleuche and Los Enamorados. Those interested in urban history can join “Quintero, Huellas de Historia Patrimonial,” a guided walk through Quintero’s streets featuring notable buildings, prominent figures and local legends.

The storytelling and time of day also vary. “Quintero Misterioso” is a nighttime guided walk through Parque Municipal, featuring local mysteries and stories. The literary experience “Francisca yo te amo” follows the settings of José Luis Rosasco’s 1988 novel, from Casa Estación to Cueva del Pirata. Guided walk dates may change; check current announcements before planning. Availability of “Quintero Misterioso” depends on a local call for participation. “Francisca yo te amo” is offered only when announced on descubrequintero.cl.

Sea, Park and Rural Landscape

Playa Los Enamorados lies at the foot of Parque Municipal in Quintero and offers access to the sea in surroundings characterised by vegetation and tall trees. The Cristo Sumergido is a very different maritime feature: the sculpture, made of reinforced concrete and steel, is 4.5 metres high, weighs 11 tonnes and was installed at a depth of twelve metres on the Roca Pratt rock.

In the rural part of the municipality of Quintero, Humedal de Mantagua and its associated dunes form a diverse landscape covering about 269 hectares. It includes wetlands, dunes, a beach, scrubland, plantations and native forest in ravines. Humedal de Mantagua is part of Chile’s biological coastal corridor and a Pan-American biological corridor used by migratory birds. The focus here is not a single attraction, but a landscape comprising different habitats, with an additional connection to bird migration. This offers a different way to choose the focus of your trip than visiting cultural sites and taking guided walks in town.
