Concón offers a range of experiences for a stay: wind-shaped dunes, wetlands rich in birdlife, coastal views, and a museum dedicated to regional cultural history. Walks among native coastal flora and water sports are also among the activities described. When deciding what to focus on during your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these experiences: a view of the bay is different from a path through a wetland or an insight into cultural history.

Dunes, viewpoints, and coastal flora

The Campo Dunar de Concón is a dune system with unique geological and geomorphological features and an important part of central Chile’s coastal landscape. The dunes are made of sand deposited by the wind; their formation involved the combined effects of wind, sand availability, topography, and vegetation. The area is also known as Dunas de Concón and was declared a Santuario de la Naturaleza. Those interested in landforms will find more than a collection of sandy areas here: the dunes’ formation is shaped by the interplay of several natural factors.

The Roca Oceánica, a natural viewpoint in Concón overlooking the bay, offers a different perspective on the coast. Visitors can enjoy the sunset there and walk among native coastal flora. While the dunes are defined primarily by their geological and geomorphological features, the Roca Oceánica brings together coastal views and plants to create a distinct nature-focused experience.

Wetlands and birdlife

The Humedal Desembocadura Río Aconcagua is located in Concón and was designated an urban wetland by the Ministry of the Environment in March 2022. It is considered one of the region’s most important bird reserves and ranks among the most important protected areas in the Valparaíso Region. Its birdlife includes resident species such as the seven-colored tanager and the coot, as well as migratory birds, including the black-necked stilt, Baird’s sandpiper, and the long-billed curlew. This gives the wetland a different focus from the dunes: here, the diversity of bird species takes center stage.

Parque Ecológico La Isla complements this natural setting with a diverse range of plant and bird life. Part of the park trail passes through an urban wetland. To distinguish between the area’s nature experiences, it is helpful to note that the park’s profile includes plant diversity and a trail section through a wetland, while the Humedal Desembocadura Río Aconcagua is described in particular as a bird reserve and protected area.

Cultural history and activities on the water

The Museo Histórico y Arqueológico de Concón is located in Casa Agustina, a building dating from 1927. Its collections are associated with the indigenous Bato, Llolleo, and Aconcagua cultures; the museum also promotes the cultural heritage of Concón and the region. Thus, alongside nature and coastal experiences, the city also offers a clear connection to cultural history.

The coastal waters at Playa Concón offer opportunities to enjoy several water sports from shore. For the La Boca area, a tourism description published in 2020 mentions surf schools that rent out complete equipment, including a board and wetsuit, and offer surf and bodyboard lessons for all age groups. Providers and availability may have changed. If you plan to take advantage of these offerings, check what is currently available in advance.

Tourism information from 2020 also describes coastal excursions that let visitors explore different parts of Concón and reach other seaside destinations in the Valparaíso Region, including Playa Cochoa, Playa Negra, and Reñaca. A tourism description also outlines a walking tour that starts at Caleta Higuerilla and in Higuerillas Alto in the La Boca area, passing places with sea views, old façades, hidden houses, terraces, and viewpoints. Trail conditions may change; before making plans, check current conditions and whether the walking tour is operating.
