Petorca’s historic center can be understood through three specific landmarks: the square Plaza de Armas with its central fountain, the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced, and the fiesta, whose procession passes over an eight-kilometer-long carpet of flowers. The broader Ruta Patrimonial Petorca offers a distinct regional perspective.

Plaza, Church, and Traces of History

Petorca’s Plaza de Armas was established in the mid-18th century. Its square layout and central fountain define the grounds. The area around the plaza forms Petorca’s administrative, financial, commercial, and religious center. The plaza is therefore a reference point for considering the town’s history alongside its religious traditions.

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced dates back to 1600, when a small chapel was built across from the main square. The church was declared a Historic Monument in 2009. Its interior preserves several noteworthy pieces: a silver tabernacle, a wooden pulpit carved by a local craftsman, and 17th-century oil paintings. These are joined by a colonial altarpiece embossed in silver and a depiction of Saint Teresa of the Andes carved in Ecuador. A life-size, jointed wooden figure of Christ is also part of the collection; Jesuits brought it to Petorca in 1660. The different materials, places of origin, and historical associations give the church a multifaceted cultural and historical significance.

Birthplace of Manuel Montt and Museum

At Avenida Manuel Montt 845, the Casa donde nació el presidente Manuel Montt marks the place where Manuel Montt was born on November 4, 1809. The present-day building at the birthplace is not the original: the original was declared a Historic Monument in 1929 and destroyed by fire forty years later. The site’s history therefore encompasses both its biographical significance and the loss of the original building.

The Museum of the Casa de la Cultura de Petorca displays items and archives from the La Voz de Petorca printing press. If you would like to include the museum in your plans, check its current accessibility in advance. This will help you plan your visit around the conditions on your travel dates.

Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Merced

The Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de la Merced has been celebrated in Petorca for more than 200 years, on the last Sunday in September. It attracts thousands of worshippers from different parts of the region each year. The celebration includes religious dances accompanying the Virgin’s procession and a carpet of flowers along the procession route. The carpet is eight kilometers long. If you plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date in advance so your plans align with this year’s program.

Getting There by Bus

Petorca as a Broader Travel Destination

Beyond the town, the wider Petorca destination includes the Ruta Patrimonial Petorca: Paisajes de Leyenda. Its five sections correspond to the five municipalities of Petorca Province: Petorca, Cabildo, La Ligua, Papudo, and Zapallar. This offers a broader framework for travelers who would like to consider other aspects of the region alongside Petorca’s history and festival traditions.

One example of the archaeological heritage is El Arenal in Pedernal, in the municipality of Petorca. The site contains 54 petroglyphs, dated approximately to between 2,000 and 500 BCE. Another focus is the priority area of Altos de Petorca y Alicahue: it covers 102,301 hectares in the mountain zone of the municipalities of Petorca and Cabildo. Its strongly Andean character is shaped by transverse valleys. In this way, the town’s historical and religious themes differ from the archaeological and landscape diversity of the broader destination.
