Los Andes Province offers several distinct reasons to visit: archaeological rock carvings and a summit trail in San Esteban, the preserved street grid of Los Andes, and Andean landscapes near Portillo. It also features an ethnographic museum and a heritage complex in Pocuro.
Petroglyphs and a summit trail in San Esteban
At the Paidahuén Archaeological Park in San Esteban, you can see more than 500 petroglyphs from the Inca and Aconcagua cultures. In the same park, a self-guided trail leads to the summit, where views extend across the valley and the mountain range. Rock art and the summit trail offer two different perspectives on this place: archaeological evidence and views of the landscape. If you plan to hike the trail, check local access conditions before your visit.
Urban layout and cultural sites
The Historic Center of Los Andes preserves the city’s original grid: seven blocks by seven, framed by tree-lined avenues. The number and arrangement of the blocks make the urban layout tangible, while the avenues frame this structure. The layout itself thus offers a concrete way to engage with the city’s history.
The Ethnographic Museum of San Esteban has three exhibition rooms covering society, work and home life, as well as the Bailes Chinos of San Esteban and the Aconcagua Valley. These themes connect different areas of life with the tradition of the Bailes Chinos. In Pocuro, the Pedro Aguirre Cerda Cultural Center is a heritage complex associated with former president Pedro Aguirre Cerda, local history and Pocuro’s identity. The two sites offer different cultural perspectives: exhibition themes at the museum, and connections to a historical figure, local history and a sense of place at the heritage complex.
Andean landscapes and ski lessons
Laguna del Inca lies near Portillo, among the rugged Andean mountains, and has an emerald-green color. Its scenery differs from the grid of blocks and avenues in the historic center of Los Andes: here, mountains and a lagoon draw the eye, while there, the planned urban layout does.
Portillo’s ski and snowboard school offers group lessons to its guests. Lessons are available for all ability levels and age groups from age four. Classes are held every day except Saturday in two time slots: from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you plan to take lessons, check the class times before your trip.
Accommodation amenities as a selection criterion
Termas El Corazón in San Esteban has three heated thermal-water pools and a spa. These facilities are part of the accommodation service, so they are relevant when choosing a place to stay, rather than as an independent sightseeing stop. When looking for a place to stay, they offer a different consideration from museums, rock art or the urban layout.
