More than 450 figures in the Pintados Geoglyphs are located in the Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve, revealing the archaeological side of the Tarapacá Region. The site offers an archaeological tourism experience that stands apart from the region’s landscapes and historic sites.

Desert, Coast, and Altiplano

Chile’s Tarapacá Region brings together coastal, desert, and Altiplano landscapes; the region is also shaped by Indigenous cultures. In the Altiplano, Isluga Volcano National Park lies among volcanoes, lagoons, and the sacred mountains of the Aymara people. Salar del Huasco National Park has a different highland character: it is a Ramsar site and natural sanctuary in the municipality of Pica. At its center lies a salt flat, framed by mountain ranges with elevations of around 5,000 meters. The protected area also includes high-Andean ecosystems and distinctive geological and geomorphological features.

Plan your visit to Salar del Huasco National Park with local conditions in mind: there is no infrastructure or hiking trails there. Check the latest visitor information in advance. Route A-685 provides access from Pica to Salar del Huasco and is classified as a gravel road; check road conditions before setting out.

Traces of Culture and History

The Humberstone and Santa Laura saltpeter works offer a different historical perspective: the open-air museum focuses on the heyday of the saltpeter industry in the early 20th century. The works were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. In Isluga Volcano National Park, the village of Isluga and its distinctive church are part of the cultural heritage; the church is designated a Historical Monument. Isluga is considered an important ceremonial center where religious festivals are celebrated.

The festivals of La Tirana celebrate local culture and residents’ beliefs through colorful dances. In Pica, the Church of San Andrés dates back to the 18th century. In the Camiña Valley, Chillayza features boulders with pictographs and petroglyphs created using black and red pigments. Together, these places reveal different expressions of regional history: from archaeological figures and rock art to religious traditions and the heritage of the saltpeter industry.

Interpretive Trails and Hikes

The Pampa del Tamarugal Environmental Education Center offers information about flora and fauna, complemented by interpretive trails. At Salar de Llamara, self-guided interpretive trails highlight the puquios and the flora and fauna associated with them. Nature is presented here both through the explanations of an environmental education center and along trails with a dedicated interpretive focus.

The Sendero de la Laguna de Arabilla trail in Isluga Volcano National Park is listed as 1.5 kilometers long, takes one hour in total, and is rated easy. The also-easy Sendero Los Tamarugos trail is 1 kilometer long and takes 40 minutes one way. The durations are defined differently: for Arabilla, the hour covers the entire route; for Los Tamarugos, the time is for each direction.

The Sendero del Volcán Isluga trail takes more time: it is 6 kilometers long, takes 9 hours, and is rated challenging even in winter. The interpretive Sendero de Jaiña trail is shorter, at 2.5 kilometers and 2 hours; its difficulty level is moderate. Length, duration, and difficulty rating provide concrete points of comparison, without reducing the trails to just one kind of nature experience.

Coast and Regional Cuisine

The extensive beaches of the Tarapacá Region invite you to go surfing. The cuisine also reflects regional connections: it is shaped by Indigenous traditions and the caravan trade routes between the Altiplano and the coast. Its culinary profile includes flavorful fish and seafood, accompanied by mangoes, guavas, and the well-known Pica lemon. The landscapes, cultural sites, and culinary connections offer different ways to discover the Tarapacá Region according to your interests.
