In Paredones, the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves and the town’s first church tell of two different historical moments. Also part of the picture are religious traditions, the coast at nearby Bucalemu, and craft traditions from across the municipality. These highlights are in different locations and can help you decide which aspects of your stay you’d like to focus on.

Church, Monument, and Local History

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves is designated a National Historic Monument of Chile. The present-day church dates from 1887 and was built of limestone masonry during the tenure of Father Francisco Urzúa. Paredones grew up around its first church, built in 1750. The dates refer to different points in time: 1750 marks the first church around which the town developed, while 1887 refers to the present-day church. The Museo Parroquial de Paredones is located inside the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves.

Religious Festivals and Salt Traditions

The Fiesta de la Virgen de las Nieves is the most important religious festival in the municipality of Paredones. It honors the town’s patron saint and strengthens local traditions and beliefs. It includes a huasa procession that begins at the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves; the festival program may vary. Another tradition is kept alive in Lo Valdivia, within the municipality of Paredones: the age-old artisanal production of sea salt. The Fiesta de la Sal is held there every year in February, at the end of the salt harvest.

Bucalemu: Sea, Promenade, and Festival

Nearby Bucalemu is 17 kilometers from Paredones. Its calm sea and a pool-like body of water are among the area’s features; the body of water is considered Bucalemu’s main tourist attraction. The Paseo Costanera de Bucalemu includes a coastal viewpoint, a park area, lighting, a covered structure, and street furniture. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit. During Paredones’s Fiestas Patrias celebrations, Bucalemu also hosts the Paila Marina Gigante, featuring music and cultural performances as well as Cueca competitions. If your trip depends on a festival date, check the date and program in advance.

Cultural Sites in the Municipality

The village of San Pedro de Alcántara, within the municipality, is protected as a Zona Típica; its main attraction is its characteristic 18th-century colonial architecture. Also within the municipality is the Piedra del Sol, a large petroglyph considered unique evidence of the Inca Trail in the region. In Cutemu, artisans make traditional chupallas from wheat straw. The process involves selecting and dyeing the straw, then braiding, shaping, and pressing it.

These cultural features take different forms: San Pedro is known for its protected village architecture, the Piedra del Sol for its rock carving, and Cutemu for its crafts. Together, these perspectives add other aspects of the municipality’s cultural heritage to the church and local history of Paredones.
