Punta Arenas lies on the Strait of Magellan. The city brings together a long waterfront, historic buildings, and museums; a natural area with an extensive network of trails is also nearby. When planning your stay, you can compare these different highlights: city history and exhibitions, the waterfront, or the Reserva Nacional Magallanes.

The City and Waterfront as Points of Reference

The Costanera de Punta Arenas is 2,700 meters long and connects the city’s two founding piers. It overlooks the Strait of Magellan. This makes it a clear reference point for finding your way along the water and adds a different perspective on Punta Arenas to the historic sights in the city.

The Museo Regional de Magallanes is located in the historic center.

Museums and Historic Ensembles

The Museo Regional de Magallanes has 14 exhibition rooms featuring contemporary-history and historical exhibitions. Together with the basement and park, the house and collections form a National Historic Monument. The palace that houses the museum belonged to the Braun family and was later donated to the city of Punta Arenas. The exhibition topics and the history of the building provide two different points of connection for a museum visit.

The Palacio Sara Braun was declared a Historic Monument by Decree D.S. 9256 on December 4, 1981. At Plaza Muñoz Gamero, the protected area includes not only the square but also all the buildings surrounding it. Together, they form an urban ensemble of exceptional heritage value. These two examples show how protected status in Punta Arenas applies both to individual buildings and to a square and its surrounding buildings.

The Cementerio Municipal de Punta Arenas Sara Braun is also part of the city’s historic heritage: it was declared a National Monument in 2012. The cemetery is on Avenida Bulnes, in the northern part of Punta Arenas. Its location is therefore quite different from that of the Museo Regional in the historic center. The Mirador del Cerro de la Cruz and the monument honoring the Goleta Ancud are also among the sights of Punta Arenas.

Ship Replicas and Excursions Nearby

The Museo Nao Victoria displays a scale replica of Hernando de Magallanes’s ship and presents four replicas of historic vessels. Interactive features include an audio guide, a touchscreen, and ambient sounds. This gives the museum a different focus from the Museo Regional: here, ships and their replicas take center stage, while the other museum features contemporary-history and historical exhibitions. Individual features may be updated; if they are important to your plans, check the current offerings in advance.

Near Punta Arenas, the Reserva Nacional Magallanes is located on the Brunswick Peninsula, seven kilometers west of the city center, within the commune of Punta Arenas. The protected area has more than 60 kilometers of interpretive and excursion trails. This allows you to compare a focus on the city’s history with an excursion destination outside the city. The trails are part of the Reserva Nacional Magallanes.

Continuing Your Journey by Bus

An intercity bus service to Puerto Natales follows Ruta 9; the route is 250 kilometers long. Punta Arenas can also be reached overland from RĂo Gallegos in Argentina by cross-border bus services. If you include either service in your travel plans, check the departure times for the relevant service. This information can help you consider onward travel as a separate planning point alongside the museums, monuments, and excursion destinations in Punta Arenas.
