Visitors choosing Quinchao for a cultural and nature trip will find two distinct highlights: Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church in Villa Quinchao and the nearby Bahía de Quinchao Wetland. Religious festivities also shape the local calendar. This makes it possible to plan your trip around specific interests, without combining cultural history, nature observation, and the journey into a single outing.

Church and Townscape in Villa Quinchao

The Catholic Church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia stands in Villa Quinchao, in the municipality of Quinchao. Construction began in the 18th century and was completed in 1880; the building was partially rebuilt around 1906. The church was declared a National Monument in July 1971 and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. It is the second-largest church in the World Heritage site complex: the building is 53 meters long and 18 meters wide, and its tower is more than 18 meters high.

The surrounding area is also part of the protected townscape. Villa Quinchao was designated a National Monument in the “Typical Zone” category under Decree 268 of 2013. The town has a linear layout, with uniform vernacular buildings dominated by the church. It is less than one block from the coast and faces an esplanade that serves as a forecourt during festivities. Here, a significant individual building forms part of a townscape in which the church plays a defining role.

Religious Festivities Throughout the Year

The church’s main feast is celebrated every year on December 8 in honor of its patron saint, Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The Cabildo de Quinchao is also associated with the celebrations on December 7 and 8. This religious activity is among the oldest in Chiloé and is surpassed only by the Cabildo de Cahuach. The tradition of the Cabildo de Nuestra Señora de Gracia in Villa Quinchao is passed down through families and sustained through community tasks; it is especially visible during the celebrations on December 8.

Another date is January 1, when the annual Marcha de las Vírgenes procession passes through Villa Quinchao. The December celebration in honor of the Virgen de Gracia and the procession at the beginning of the year are separate religious events. If one of these events will determine when you travel, check the schedule for the respective celebration in advance.

Bahía de Quinchao Wetland

The nearby Bahía de Quinchao Wetland lies right next to Villa Quinchao. It covers 102.8 hectares, is recognized as an Important Bird Area, and is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. Its landscape includes an extensive tidal flat and an adjoining coastal stretch of marshland approximately one kilometer long. These figures give an idea of the protected area’s size and character.

A 2021 report described the wetland as the most important place for birdwatching tourism in the municipality of Quinchao. The area is considered suitable for birdwatching and is also associated with specialist excursions and environmental education workshops. If you would like to plan one of these activities, check before your trip whether it is offered on your dates.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

The described route to Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church starts in Dalcahue, where you take a ferry to Quinchao Island. From the landing, an asphalt road leads to the town of Quinchao. Check the ferry schedule before setting out so you can take this connection into account when planning your trip.

When choosing your travel dates, consider whether architecture and the townscape, religious events, or nature observation are your main interests. The festivities on December 8 or January 1 are relevant if you plan to travel around those dates; if birdwatching is your priority, check whether one of the activities associated with the wetland is taking place on your dates. This lets you plan your visit to Quinchao around your own interests without assuming that every traveler wants the same kind of stay.
