Plaza de Armas is Salamanca’s main public square—and the starting point for the cycling route in Valle de Chalinga. The town brings together a central landmark and a specific activity, along with cultural and scenic destinations in the nearby area and further afield.

Square, Cultural Heritage and Cycling Route

Plaza de Armas lies in the heart of Salamanca and covers 17,000 m². The Centro Cultural Estación Salamanca offers another perspective on the town’s history: this splendid building made of Oregon pine was declared a Historic Monument in 2004. The Centro includes a park with an open-air stage, a promenade of artisans, gazebos for relaxation and recreation, and well-kept gardens. The Centro also displays old furniture, objects, and photographs from the railway station’s years of operation.

The parish church is another attraction in the historic center. Together, the square, railway station building, and church offer different points of interest if you’re planning to combine your stay with a town walk and cultural experiences.

The cycling route in Valle de Chalinga starts at Plaza de Armas. It is a moderately difficult loop along paved and gravel roads with gentle climbs. The estimated time for the circuit is 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Use this as a planning estimate rather than a fixed schedule, and check route conditions before setting out.

Views and Nearby Destinations

Cerro La Cruz offers a different experience from the cycling tour: it is a viewpoint overlooking the deeply incised valley visible from Salamanca. The hill is also home to petroglyphs attributed to the Molle and Diaguita cultures. Nearby Chalinga is also known for its petroglyphs; the viewpoint and the town are two distinct destinations.

Nearby Tacitas de Quelén is a waterfall that forms three pools. Raja de Manquehua is a nature reserve featuring a striking geological rock formation in the shape of a cliff face. At nearby Embalse Corrales, photography and observing flora and fauna are possible activities. For an active outing in the area, a moderately difficult trekking route leads to nearby Salto Los González.

Local Traditions and Regional Excursions

Nearby Cancha Brava is home to women producers of chicha and chacolo. These traditional liqueurs are made from grapes through fermentation and produced in 200-year-old clay jars. The location helps distinguish this drinks-related experience from the attractions in central Salamanca.

Astronomical observations are offered in the municipality of Salamanca, in the Cordillera de Salamanca and Valle de Camisas. Low light pollution allows visitors to see stars, constellations, and nebulae, as well as the Milky Way particularly clearly. These activities are available across the municipality, so the locations mentioned should not be mistaken for a single observation point in town.

The Ruta del Vino Salamanca is located in Valle del Choapa, in the wider regional area. It is aimed at independent travelers with their own vehicle or visitors on a private tour. Its range of themes includes wine, pisco, local cuisine, history, nature, and local producers. Plan this route as a regional excursion, not as a single destination in the town center.

Valle de Chalinga is also home to a religious sanctuary built in the mid-20th century that receives around 3,000 pilgrims. It lies 12 km northeast of Salamanca. This excursion is therefore also geographically distinct from activities that start directly at Plaza de Armas.
