Throughout the year, Yumbel combines religious events with rural festivals and the varied program of the Fiestas Patrias in September. The Festividad de San Sebastián, the Muestra Campesina and the Trilla a Yegua Suelta differ both in month and in content. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to choose an occasion first: religious services and pilgrims, agricultural products and crafts, a traditional threshing process, or a festival program with several types of events.

San Sebastián: Pilgrimage Dates and Religious Services

The Festividad de San Sebastián takes place in Yumbel every year on January 20 and March 20, welcoming hundreds of pilgrims from across the country. The two dates fall in different months and offer two windows for a visit for religious reasons. Religious services begin at midnight and are repeated every two hours throughout the day. This lets you take both the feast day and the schedule of services spread throughout the day into account when planning.

The office of Parroquia San Sebastián de Yumbel is open Monday through Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00. If you are also planning a visit to the parish office during the Festividad, take this separate morning opening window into account; it differs from the schedule of religious services for the pilgrimage celebration.

April: Muestra Campesina

In April, the Muestra Campesina takes place at Parque Urbano Cerro de la Virgen in Yumbel. The annual event brings together more than 180 exhibitors offering agricultural products, traditional cuisine and handicrafts. Cocinerías—stalls or areas serving prepared food—complement the fair offerings at the event site. So, alongside products and crafts, visitors can also find ready-to-eat dishes at the venue. Check the specific festival dates for the year before traveling.

January: Trilla a Yegua Suelta

The Trilla a Yegua Suelta is a rural traditional festival held annually in Yumbel in January. Visitors and residents can learn about the entire process, from cutting and stacking to threshing. Tastings of traditional foods and drinks are part of the festival. Unlike the Muestra Campesina, which brings together exhibitors and a range of products, the Trilla focuses on a traditional agricultural work process.

September: Fiestas Patrias

During the recurring Fiestas Patrias in September, Yumbel offers ramadas, cueca competitions, rayuela, palo encebado, Chilean horse races, traditional cuisine and folk music. This sets the festival program apart both from the religious services and pilgrimage dates of the Festividad de San Sebastián and from the agricultural process of the Trilla. For visitors who want to combine different types of events, games, competitions, races, food and music offer a varied program.

Months and Occasions at a Glance

Several travel windows are available throughout the year. In January, there is both the Festividad date on January 20 and the Trilla, which also takes place that month; the second pilgrimage date is March 20. The Muestra follows in April, and the Fiestas Patrias in September. You can therefore plan your stay around a religious occasion, the traditional rural festival, the fair or the September program.
