Three areas make up the Chinchorro Culture World Heritage Site: Faldeo Norte del Morro de Arica, ColĂłn 10, and Desembocadura de Camarones. It includes the oldest known archaeological evidence of the artificial mummification of the dead and is a unique testament to the complex spirituality of the Chinchorro Culture. Those wishing to discover the Arica and Parinacota Region through its culture will find a special window into its history here.
Archaeological Sites and Andean Culture
Further cultural discoveries offer a glimpse into different periods and forms of expression. In the Cerro Blanco sector near the village of OfragĂa, 60 blocks bear pre-Hispanic engravings dating from approximately 1000 to 1500 AD. Pucará de Copaquilla was built for defensive purposes in the 12th century and is protected by a double wall.
The Ruta de las Misiones runs through the regions of Arica y Parinacota and Tarapacá. It introduces visitors to old colonial churches that reflect Andean cultural heritage. At the summit of Morro de Arica, a lookout offers views of the bay and coast; a museum dedicated to preserving regional identity is also located there. The Chinchorro site, the engravings, the Pucará, and the church route thus offer different perspectives on archaeological and cultural heritage.
Protected Areas, Wildlife, and Geological Formations
The Lauca Biosphere Reserve includes Parque Nacional Lauca, Reserva Nacional Las Vicuñas, and Monumento Natural Salar de Surire. In Salar de Surire, the protected area is home year-round to three flamingo species: the Chilean flamingo, the Andean flamingo, and James's flamingo. At Termas de Polloquere in Salar de Surire, water temperatures reach up to 60 °C; there is also a picnic area.
In Reserva Nacional Las Vicuñas, vicuñas can be seen in family herds, juvenile groups, and as solitary males. The Pueblo del Diablo area consists of geological formations created by rain erosion and is recommended for photography. Monumento Natural Picaflor de Arica protects the endangered Arica hummingbird (Eulidia yarrellii), as well as vegetation typical of the interior tropical thorn forest.
Lago Chungará offers a setting suitable for recreational activities and opportunities to observe alpacas, vizcachas, guanacos, vicuñas, pumas, llamas, and foxes. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The region's nature experiences therefore vary, from flamingos at Salar de Surire and vicuñas in Reserva Nacional Las Vicuñas to possible wildlife sightings by the lake.
Trails and Practical Information
The trail details cover different distances: Sendero Chungará in Parque Nacional Lauca is 600 meters long, takes 30 minutes, and is rated easy. Sendero de Excursión Cotacotani is 13 kilometers long, is accessible to vehicles and pedestrians, and has eight viewpoints. Check this trail's accessibility and condition before your trip.
Access conditions also vary between protected areas. Parque Nacional Lauca can only be reached via the international Arica–La Paz highway, Ruta 11-CH. Reserva Nacional Las Vicuñas can be reached via routes 11-CH and A-235; there is no public transportation to this protected area. There is also no public transportation to Monumento Natural Salar de Surire, and private vehicles must have four-wheel drive. This information can help you plan travel to each natural area separately.
Festivals, Wine, and the Sea
Carnaval Andino Con la Fuerza del Sol takes place every year during the summer season in the Arica and Parinacota Region; dates vary from year to year. Vendimia de Codpa is an Andean celebration centered on Pintatani wine. The festival includes traditional grape stomping and tastings of local wine; dates and activities may vary by edition. In Codpa, Pintatani is made from locally grown grapes. This brings together the production of the wine and its role in a regional celebration.
At Playa Chinchorro, there are schools where visitors can rent equipment and learn to surf. Providers and availability may change, so check current offerings before your trip. Together with the cultural heritage, protected areas, and wine traditions, the beach adds to the range of experiences the region has to offer.
