Coyhaique reveals itself through its regional history, distinctive urban layout and nearby natural attractions. In the centre, the pentagonal Plaza de Armas shapes the cityscape; the Museo Regional de Aysén tells the story of settlement and livestock farming. The Reserva Nacional Coyhaique lies about five kilometres northeast of the city and offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. These different highlights can help you decide whether to spend more time at cultural sites and city parks or on nature experiences during your stay.

Regional history at the Museo Regional de Aysén

The Museo Regional de Aysén is located in Coyhaique at kilometre 3 on the road to Coyhaique Alto. It comprises six restored buildings belonging to the Sociedad Industrial de Aysén, which have been designated National Historic Monuments of Chile since 2009. The buildings themselves give a museum visit a tangible connection to the history of the region.

The regional permanent exhibition explores how Aysén was settled and inhabited through a range of experiences. It also presents the biodiversity of Patagonia in a new immersive hall. The Pulpería exhibition focuses on the origins of the Sociedad Industrial de Aysén’s Estancia Coyhaique. It tells the story of the settlement of this company and other livestock concessions as a state-supported colonisation of Aysén in the early 20th century. Wool and sheep farming represent important developments in the region. A pulpería—a general store—has been reconstructed in the building in keeping with its original use.

Another connection to regional history can be found in the Teniente Vidal neighbourhood: the Monumento al Mate stands there. Segismundo Sade created it to honour the pioneers of the Aysén Region. The monument and the exhibition emphasise different aspects: a public tribute in one case, and a more detailed exploration of settlement, work and everyday history in the other.

Squares and paths around the city

Plaza de Armas is considered the most important and iconic square in central Coyhaique. Its pentagonal shape is especially striking: nine roads for vehicle traffic and one pedestrian street converge at the square. Its unusual layout makes it a distinctive landmark in the city centre.

Parque Urbano Costanera Río Simpson also combines urban orientation with views of the surrounding natural landscape. The park stretches for three kilometres and includes five sections: Parque de los Niños, Mirador Río Simpson, Mirador del Río, Mirador Quinta Burgos and Mirador Hacia Piedra del Indio. Cycle paths, lighting and walkways connect the sections for pedestrians and cyclists. If you plan to visit the park, you’ll find both longer stretches of path and several named viewpoints.

Plaza Mirador Río Coyhaique is a public viewpoint established in 2014. From there, you can see the Reserva Nacional Coyhaique, Cerro Cinchao and the Río Coyhaique. Another landmark is La Piedra del Indio: its rock formation is said to resemble an Indigenous person and is considered a cultural and natural landmark of Coyhaique. The best views for looking and taking photographs are from the bridge on Camino Piedra del Indio.

Nature at the Reserva Nacional Coyhaique

The nearby Reserva Nacional Coyhaique lies about five kilometres northeast of Coyhaique. Its lagoons include Verde, Venus, Los Sapos and Los Mallines, among others. Wildlife is also diverse: the reserve is home to condors, Magellanic woodpeckers, pumas, culpeo foxes and coypus, among other species. These species give an idea of the variety of animals found in this natural area; sightings are not guaranteed.

For a walk on a clearly named route, consider the Sendero Los Leñeros in the reserve. This easy trail is two kilometres long and takes about one hour in total. Access and trail conditions may change; check both before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish this route from the longer park paths in Coyhaique, without suggesting that the two form a single circuit.

Local handicrafts

At the Feria Artesanal in Coyhaique, local artists and craftspeople display items made from wool, leather, ceramics, stone and wood. These crafts complement the museum’s historical themes with materials and works presented in the city.
