Puerto Aysén lies on the Río Aysén, just 3 km from Fiordo Aysén; the historic suspension bridge Puente Presidente Ibáñez crosses the river and connects the Ribera Norte and Ribera Sur areas of Puerto Aysén. Together with its riverside setting and activities in the surrounding area, Aisén offers different ways to experience a trip: local history, walking trails, and tours on the water. If you are looking for a hotel in Aisén, you can first consider which of these aspects you want to focus on during your stay.
Puerto Aysén by the River
Puerto Aysén lies on the Río Aysén, just 3 km from Fiordo Aysén. Settlement began toward the end of the 19th century; the town was officially founded on January 28, 1928. The history of settlement therefore goes back beyond the formal founding date. The bridge offers a tangible point of interest if you want to include architecture and local history in your trip.
Road Connection and Landscapes
The Camino Coyhaique–Puerto Aysén is considered scenic, is paved, 67 km long, and runs from east to west. This means the drive itself can be part of your travel plans. Road conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.
Hiking Trails for Different Schedules and Experience Levels
Nearby Reserva Nacional Río Simpson offers the easy Sendero Los Colonos trail. It is 3.4 km long, and the full route takes about two hours. The Sendero de Los Pioneros also runs through the same reserve. It starts at the former route connecting Puerto Aysén and Coyhaique and is 3 km each way. When comparing the trails, note the different distance measurements: the total length is given for Los Colonos, while the distance for Los Pioneros is stated per direction.
A trekking route on Cerro Cordón passes through lenga forests and offers panoramic views of the city. The round trip is about 12 km long, takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, and is considered moderately difficult. This is a significant difference in time commitment from the approximately two-hour hike on Sendero Los Colonos. Trail conditions and access requirements may change; check them before setting out.
Kayaking and Horseback Riding
A kayak trip on the Río Los Palos leads to Lago Los Palos; on the Río Aysén, you can paddle as far as Bahía Acantilada. The kayaking routes are considered particularly scenic. They follow different rivers to different destinations and can therefore be planned as separate options.
In the Río Los Palos valley, horseback rides through the evergreen forest to Cerro Nevado are available. Along the way, views extend across the Puerto Aysén valley and part of Lago Los Palos. Availability with tour providers may vary; ask before making plans.
Getting There by Bus
Buses run daily between Coyhaique and Puerto Aysén, approximately every one to two hours. Buses to Puerto Chacabuco also run daily, with departures about 1.5 hours apart. Check the current schedule before traveling so you can plan your journey around the approximate intervals.
