Bozhurka combines natural attractions with cultural heritage. The 17-metre-deep Skakaloto Cave and the main route to Svetlata Dupka provide specific starting points for outdoor activities; around Baba Kondu, sacred significance and local customs take centre stage. This allows you to distinguish between a specific cave destination, a route with a picnic spot and regional cultural traditions. If you plan to visit events and local facilities, ask about current dates and opening hours in advance.
Cave, Trails and Forest
Skakaloto Cave in Bozhurka is 17 metres deep and is considered freely accessible. The main route to Svetlata Dupka passes through Bozhurka and Paydushko. Along the route towards Svetlata Dupka, a picnic clearing with benches and tables lies 2.8 kilometres along the way. As trail conditions and facilities may change, check the condition of the route on site, as well as whether benches and tables are available. The cave and the route appeal to different nature interests: a named cave destination on the one hand, and a route with a picnic clearing on the other.
Another natural attraction is in nearby Bratovo: the Petka Balkan protected area covers 5.4 hectares and protects a mixed forest that is about 150 years old. The cave in Bozhurka and a protected forest in the surrounding area thus offer different landscape impressions.
Baba Kondu and Local Culture
For generations, the centuries-old forest and the sacred site of Baba Kondu between Bozhurka and Bratovo have been revered as miraculous. Local stories surround the name Baba Kondu and the area's natural features. Baba Kondu is considered sacred; please respect the local custom of not removing anything from the site.
The Baba Kondu gathering has been passed down from generation to generation and represents tolerance, sharing and respect. The programme includes wrestling and horse races; performances showcase the cultural traditions of various ethnic groups in the region. If you would like to experience the gathering, find out the dates before your trip.
The community centre in Bozhurka also offers cultural activities, including a public library, a women's folklore group that performs locally and the “Skillful Hands” crafts club. Before visiting, ask about the library's current opening hours and whether performances or club activities are taking place.
Exploring the Wider Area
In the wider Targovishte area, the Konya rock formation and Boaza Waterfall are among the protected natural landmarks. Boaza is connected to the Vrana River, which cuts through the slopes of the Preslav Mountains. The small waterfall, fed by groundwater, lies near Paydushko. These destinations extend the natural context beyond Bozhurka's local landscapes.
A municipal road connects Paydushko to Bozhurka and continues via Bratovo to Tsvetnitsa. As road conditions may change, check them before travelling.
