Discover Popovo from two different perspectives: archaeological history and the regional landscape. For planning your trip, it helps to keep these highlights distinct. Around the fortress and museums, specific historical themes take center stage; trails and ridges offer a different kind of excursion. When choosing your accommodation, first consider which of these interests will shape your trip.

Archaeology at Kovachevsko Kale

Six kilometres west of Popovo, on road II-51, lies the Late Antique fortress of Kovachevsko Kale. Archaeological work has uncovered more than 200 metres of wall, five towers, a west gate, a granary, a bath complex, two Early Christian basilicas and cult buildings. The fortress is described as a complex covering around 40 decares, with 17 towers and two gates. Its use is dated to the 4th to 6th centuries; its destruction is associated with invasions by the Huns, Slavs and Avars.

A permanent archaeological exhibition opened at the site in 2025. It covers architecture, trade, everyday life, religion and clothing in the 4th to 6th centuries. Hands-on activities include archaeological role-playing, Roman games, minting souvenir coins and a ring-toss game. The site also has a children's area with archery, a trampoline and organised recreational games. As visitor facilities may change, check the current opening arrangements and activities in advance. Facilities include an exhibition hall, a conference hall, parking for cars and buses, an amphitheatre and a rest area with a permanent oven and barbecue; check access before your visit as well.

Museums and cultural themes

The Historical Museum–Popovo is located in the city's first public building, constructed in 1883 for the district administration. Its collection on modern and contemporary history comprises more than 8,500 movable cultural objects and spans the National Revival period, the time before 1944 and the period after 1944. The museum is one of Bulgaria's 100 National Tourist Sites.

The exhibition “Icons of the National Revival Period” features rare icons from the 18th and 19th centuries, once kept in churches in Popovo and surrounding settlements. The icon collection also demonstrates the influence of Tryavna icon painting in the Popovo area from the 18th century onward. At the gallery in the former municipal revenue building, exhibition themes include icons, the ethnographic exhibition “Magic of Colours” and a presentation about a Jewish family and hidden stars. Exhibition contents may change. At the Golden Eye Festival, a creative programme combines free film screenings with themes related to cinematographers and film productions; the programme varies from one edition to another.

Trails and landscapes

The 13.5-kilometre “Golyamata Reka” eco-trail runs between Ivancha and Dolec along Buyuk Dere, 20 kilometres south of Popovo. Water, rocks and vegetation shape the landscape at the boundary between the Balkan foothills and the Danubian Plain. Check the trail's condition and access before your visit. Kalakoc offers a different perspective: at 488 metres, it is the highest part of the Popovo Heights. It can be reached on foot from Popovo and Kovachevets, with views from there across villages, rivers and reservoirs.

An asphalt road leads to the summit area of Kerchan Hill and is suitable for buses, cars and bicycles. There are fountains, rest areas and picnic spots along the route; check the road and facilities locally. To arrange assistance with a visit to the spring and chapel of Zvezda, contact the mayor's office in the village. Contact details may change.

When to visit and where to stay

A weekly market is held in Popovo on Fridays. The annual Popovo Festival takes place during Rusalska Week, after Pentecost. Check the dates for your trip before planning a visit.

The Kapantsi villages of Sadina, Palamartsa and Zahari Stoyanovo are considered places where the culture and traditions of the ancestors are preserved. A 2018 report links Sadina to the Kapantsi dishes kombastă and trienitsa and describes a traditional gathering with a cooking competition and tastings. Municipal tourism material, last updated on 14 September 2012, lists accommodation at the Kapantsi Architecture and Ethnography Complex in Sadina, as well as the option of renting the entire complex to visitor groups. Confirm whether these arrangements are currently available before making plans. This information refers to group accommodation and should not be treated as a hotel listing.
