In Omurtag, you’ll encounter a range of historical themes: the Historical Museum spans everything from archaeological finds to Bulgarian spaceflight. The preserved old town heritage focuses on church and residential architecture; the Aviation Park presents another side of aviation history. This gives you a choice of different cultural interests for your stay.

Location and orientation

Omurtag is located in the eastern Fore-Balkan between the Tuzluka area and the Gerlovo Basin. Omurtag Municipality belongs to the Stara Planina tourism region, Eastern subregion. At the municipal level, the landscape is shaped by hilly foothills and low mountains. Tree species in the mixed forests include oaks, hornbeams, beeches and silver lindens.

For road orientation, the first-class I-4 is a prominent reference point: it bypasses Omurtag to the north as the main bypass and carries a large share of heavy and through traffic. Its function and location give you a specific reference point when locating Omurtag on a map.

The Historical Museum: from archaeology to spaceflight

The Omurtag Historical Museum began as a collection in 1973 and became a historical museum in 1994. Its exhibitions are presented in three restored buildings. The two years mark different stages in the institution’s history: its beginnings as a collection and its later conversion into a historical museum.

The Archaeological Hall displays evidence pointing to settlement in the area of today’s city around 7,000 years ago. The ethnographic exhibition offers a different way of exploring the past, with urban clothing, furniture and textiles. Archaeological evidence and objects from urban daily life are thus presented as distinct themes. The collection also includes the space suit of Bulgarian cosmonaut Alexander Alexandrov, extending the focus from regional history to spaceflight. Guided discussions are also offered in the museum complex.

Old town heritage and church architecture

Omurtag’s preserved old town heritage includes the Church of St. Dimitar, the Menzilishka Fountain dating from 1779, and six houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period. The House of Baba Ivanka Hadzhiykata, built in 1876, is also part of the heritage. It is the last representative residential building preserved from old Osman Pazar. These examples range from a public fountain to several houses and a single building with particular historical significance.

The Church of St. Dimitar is a three-nave basilica. The term refers to a church interior with a central nave and two side aisles. The church was designated an artistic monument on December 17, 1971, and an architectural monument on September 3, 1972. The two dates record different heritage designations; they are not the year the church was built.

Aviation and local culture

The Aviation Park opened in 2008 at the entrance to Omurtag. It displays aircraft and other equipment formerly used by the Bulgarian Air Force. Together with the space suit in the museum, this offers a clear thematic comparison: the park focuses on aircraft and military equipment, while the museum presents an object connected with spaceflight. This makes it possible to distinguish two different aspects of aviation history.

Another historical cultural landmark is the Otec Paisiy Community Center in Omurtag. The building was constructed in 1870; the center developed into an established cultural institution for the local community. Alongside the museum, old town heritage and Aviation Park, the history of a local cultural institution also adds to the town’s cultural themes.
