Nisovo is best explored along its trails: the Dendro Trail leads to a rocky viewpoint with panoramic views of the Malki Lom River. When planning a visit, you can choose between the themed trails and a longer extension to the monasteries of Nisovo. The routes described provide a practical framework for planning your excursions.

The Dendro Trail and the River Landscape

The themed trails of the Dendro Trail cover a total of 6 kilometres. Along the way, more than 30 native tree and shrub species are identified with name signs. Five large information boards provide information via QR code and in English. Plants, the route and the viewpoint offer different ways to discover the landscape around Nisovo.

Nisovo directly borders Rusenski Lom Nature Park. There, the river flows through striking gorges with rock walls up to 120 metres high; caves and rock formations also characterise the area. A significant area for ornithology has been designated in the wider nature park region. Visitors can observe falcons, hawks, Egyptian vultures, red-breasted geese and rock pigeons, among other species.

Trails to the Lomovete Complex and the Monasteries

From Nisovo, the Lomovete Nature Reserve can be reached via a 1.5-kilometre turnoff from the road to Popovo. From the reserve, a marked path leads downhill in five minutes to an unpaved road on the left bank of the Malki Lom. The route then follows the river 300 metres upstream to a small bridge with railings that leads to the opposite bank.

If you continue along the Dendro Trail to the Small and Great Monasteries of Nisovo, allow for an additional 4 kilometres. There is a rest area at the monasteries. The themed trails and the additional stretch can therefore be treated as different excursion lengths, without combining them into a single distance.

Cultural Sites in the Ivanovo Destination

Nearby Cherven was home to the fortified inner town, with towers and bastions; the outer town lay at the foot of a rocky ridge. An artificial water tunnel was discovered there. The fortress watchtower is considered the only surviving medieval tower in Bulgaria. The medieval town fortress lies in Rusenski Lom Nature Park and is an archaeological reserve.

In the wider destination of Ivanovo, the rock-hewn churches near the village of Ivanovo offer a distinct cultural highlight. A complex of churches, chapels, monasteries and cells carved into the rock developed there. The 14th-century wall paintings testify to the exceptional skill of the artists of the Tarnovo School of Painting. Nisovo is also home to an approximately 700-year-old elm, which is said to date from the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire.

When planning your overnight stay, it helps to decide on your main focus first: the 6 kilometres of themed trails, the additional extension to the monasteries, or other cultural sites in the wider destination of Ivanovo.
