Near Tsar Kaloyan, there are three rock monasteries in the Beli Lom Valley: Tsarkvata, Kalugeritsa and Torlashkiyat Manastir. For planning your trip, you can choose between rock architecture, protected landscapes and local recreational activities as different areas of interest. You can decide what to focus on depending on whether you are especially interested in medieval heritage, nature or outdoor activities.

Rock Monasteries and Medieval Heritage

Torlashkiyat Manastir includes a church and a cell carved into the rock. It also features medieval Bulgarian inscriptions and pottery. The church and cell reveal two spatial aspects of the site; the inscriptions connect it with a linguistic trace of medieval Bulgarian history, while the pottery adds a material perspective. Before visiting the rock sites, check the access conditions locally.

North of Tsar Kaloyan, near the Beli Lom River, the remains of a rock monastery have been preserved. They are in very poor condition, which may change. If you plan to include these remains in your itinerary, check their condition again before your visit.

Nature Park and Reserve

Part of Tsar Kaloyan lies within Rusenski Lom Nature Park; the park includes the Beli Lom Reserve. It protects the forest ecosystems of Ludogorie and supports diverse wildlife and plant life, including birds, mammals and bats. Compared with the rock monasteries, the focus here shifts from the buildings and medieval finds at Torlashkiyat Manastir to forest ecosystems and biodiversity. This gives you a cultural-historical focus and an ecological focus to choose between.

Hiking and Outdoor Recreation

Hiking is permitted on designated routes in the Beli Lom Reserve. Existing paths in the Beli Lom area are regulated to provide access to rocky and botanical features. If you plan a hike, follow the designated routes and check the local trail layout and access conditions before your visit.

Within Tsar Kaloyan, the localities of Sali Bey and Oresh Bair are used for family outings, picnics and hikes. Compared with the designated routes, these localities offer a broader range of recreational activities: as well as hiking, they are used for picnics and family outings. This distinction is useful if you would rather plan outdoor time around hiking or picnicking.

Museum and Ethnographic Collection

The municipality of Tsar Kaloyan has a museum and an ethnographic collection documenting local life. The collections include paintings and graphic art. This means the cultural theme extends from the rock architecture of Torlashkiyat Manastir to the collection’s perspective on local life and visual arts. The collection combines ethnographic documentation with art holdings; at Torlashkiyat Manastir, by contrast, the focus is on the rock church, cell, inscriptions and pottery. These cultural experiences differ in the subjects they present.
