The active Monastery of St. George the Great Martyr and the ancient plane tree in Chinarite give Belashtitsa a distinctive religious and historical character. The details range from a foundation in 1020 to a tree estimated to be more than 1,300 years old.

Monastery of St. George the Great Martyr

The monastery is a historic religious complex founded in 1020 that remains active to this day. Its grounds include a church, residential and utility buildings, a chapel, and a spring. The ensemble therefore includes buildings for living and working as well as sacred spaces—offering a concrete impression of the many facets of a monastic complex.

The monastery is open to pilgrims. In the religious calendar, May 6 is highlighted as the feast day of St. George the Great Martyr. For a religiously oriented trip, this annual date provides a clear point of reference.

The monastery church contains the spring known as the “Life-Giving Spring.” In the courtyard stands a stone fountain dated to 1831, along with a garden cared for by the nuns. The features are spread across different parts of the complex: the spring is in the church, while the fountain and garden are in the courtyard.

The Chinarite Plane Tree

An exceptionally large Oriental plane tree stands in the nearby locality of Chinarite. Its trunk circumference is about 15 metres, and its age is estimated at more than 1,300 years. This makes the tree a notable natural and historical feature, while keeping its age an estimate rather than treating it as an unchanging figure.

More perspectives in Rhodopi Municipality

In the wider destination of Rhodopi Municipality, independent nature and cultural themes broaden the picture of Belashtitsa. At the Izvor eco-trail, the two main routes are “Momina Skala” and “Trite Chuchura.” A fishpond is part of the route and makes it possible to combine the outing with fishing. Check fishing rules and availability locally; trail conditions may also change.

In Brestovitsa, the “Vlahovata Kashta” Wine Museum is dedicated to the ancient and modern history of wine from the Brestovitsa region. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance. Also in Brestovitsa, Villa Vinifera was built in 1936 and is a winery of the classical type. The “Path of Dionysius” route passes through the municipality and provides another regional connection to wine.

The festival calendar also marks the seasons. Every year in early December, Rhodopi Municipality holds the “Dionysian Festivals of Young Wine.” The festival lasts two or three days and takes place in different settlements across the municipality. On February 14, Brestovitsa celebrates “Trifon Zarezan”: several wineries take part, young people participate actively, and the custom is authentically reenacted. Dates, venues, and programme details may change; check them before your trip.
