In Perushtitsa, traces of Christian history, art and views of the Rhodope landscape are all close at hand. The 23-metre-high Monument of the Three Generations stands above the town on Vlasevitsa Hill; from there, you can see Perushtitsa, the city of Plovdiv and the Rhodope Mountains. Perushtitsa is also described as a starting point for hikes in the Chernatishki section of the western Rhodope Mountains.

Churches, Museum and Art

The Red Church, also known as the Basilica of St. Mary, is a partially preserved late antique and early medieval Christian monument near Perushtitsa. It was in use from the 4th to the 14th century and is designated a monument of national significance. A 700-metre footpath leads to the church, where a visitor centre has been built.

The Danov School also offers a glimpse into Perushtitsa’s history. It was built in 1850 in the courtyard of the Church of St. Michael and St. Gabriel and now serves as a museum and art gallery. Temporary and guest exhibitions by Bulgarian artists are held in the basement. The building thus brings together the history of education and changing art exhibitions.

The Church of the Holy Archangels Gabriel and Michael contains a stone sarcophagus with the remains of revolutionaries. The Perushtitsa Historical Museum offers themed tours and talks in its galleries and at associated historical monuments; arrange these before your visit. The art gallery in Perushtitsa hosts classical concerts and talks on art and science. Visitors interested in different aspects of cultural life can therefore find exhibitions and events alongside historical sites.

Viewpoints and Trails in the Landscape

The Monument of the Three Generations can be reached by car or on foot via an asphalt road. For a different elevation, there is the Peristitsa Fortress: it is located on a rocky hill 668 metres high, just under three kilometres south of Perushtitsa. The two viewpoints thus differ both in location and in their stated elevation and distance.

Eco-trails connect some of Perushtitsa’s heritage sites and offer views of its historical and natural landscape. Hiking in the Chernatishki section of the western Rhodope Mountains is also among the activities described in the area. Trail conditions and signage may change; check local conditions before setting out on a hike.

The megalithic sanctuary of Manastirski Skali lies in the mountains about five kilometres south of Perushtitsa. The drive follows the road towards Skobelevo and Churen. Park near the turn-off to the monastery; from there, continue on foot along an unpaved road. This access route differs from the asphalt road to the Monument of the Three Generations and is useful to know when planning your visit.

Wine and Visits by Arrangement

The Vinograd winery in Perushtitsa produces red, white and rosé wines. Guided tours and wine tastings are available by prior request. As arrangements for requests may change, confirm them in advance. This makes wine a distinct part of a stay, alongside historical sites, art offerings and hiking destinations.
