Velingrad lies in the Chepino Valley, in the western part of the Rhodopes, at an altitude of 755 meters above sea level. Thermal springs define the town, alongside hiking trails, scenic destinations and historical sights. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether mineral water, outdoor activities or cultural history will be your main focus.

Thermal Springs and Mineral Water

Velingrad’s thermomineral deposit is considered the largest in Bulgaria. In the Chepino thermal zone, twelve springs are spread over around 70 meters; this includes Bulgaria’s thermomineral spring with the highest flow rate. In the central district of Lyudzhene, a zone with 40 thermal springs extends for about two kilometers along the Lukovitsa Valley. The two areas therefore differ both in the number of springs and in their geographical extent.

The Central Mineral Beach has three pools, including a 33-meter-long pool with mineral water. If you plan to visit this bathing area, check the current access arrangements before your visit. This makes thermal bathing a concrete part of your plans without conflating it with the hiking and cultural offerings.

Hiking, Views and Nature

Around Velingrad and Yundola, more than 30 marked eco-hiking trails are among the tourist routes; guided hikes are offered year-round. The Elin Vrah trail reaches a summit at 1,568 meters. From there, panoramic views extend towards Velingrad, the Rhodopes, Stara Planina, Pirin and the eastern Rila Mountains. Pashovi Skali is a natural monument reached via a marked trail; from there, panoramic views open up towards the Rhodopes, Rila and Pirin.

Marked hiking trails begin at Kleptuza, heading towards Harmanite, Brezi and Sivata Voda. Two artificial lakes form a recreation area there, which also has water bicycles. If you want to plan this activity in advance, check what is available on your chosen date. There is a ski slope in Kurtovo, and marked hiking trails also begin there. These options offer different possibilities for your stay without specifying a particular route or season for your trip.

Felibelijska Meadow was designated a protected area in 1981 because it provides a habitat for the mountain peony. The Seven Brothers tree also stands there: seven trunks grow from a single root. The protected area and the tree offer a distinct aspect of nature alongside the hiking trails and panoramic viewpoints.

Culture and History

The Velingrad Historical Museum preserves and studies more than 19,000 archaeological finds and cultural heritage objects. Its permanent exhibitions are dedicated to Vela Peeva, local ethnography, painted Easter eggs and Nikolay Gyaurov. In Kamenitsa stands the Holy Trinity Church, built in 1816 on the foundations of an older stone church. At its western entrance is a rare Bulgarian variant of the blue icon of the Virgin Mary.

The Bess sanctuary on Mount Ostretz has been sacred to local people for more than 3,000 years. Traditional health kurbans are held at the sanctuary on May 6 in connection with St. George’s Day. Another historical site is Cepina Fortress: it lies 18 kilometers east of Velingrad and was the seat of Despot Slav. These examples range from a religious tradition to a historic seat of power.

Getting There and Finding a Hotel

The Rhodope narrow-gauge railway connects Septemvri, Velingrad, Yakoruda, Razlog, Bansko and Dobrinishte. It is considered a year-round tourist journey through scenic areas. If you want to include the railway in your journey, check the timetable in advance.

Plan the length of your stay and your daily schedule accordingly, and choose accommodation that suits your personal travel plans.
