Kirkovo offers several distinct destinations: springs near the village, routes to a peak and a protected area, as well as a domed tomb and a protected rock formation. You can plan your stay around the focus you prefer—whether a specific route, mountain and forest landscapes, or cultural and natural heritage. A good place to start is by considering the destination together with the route information for it.

Routes to springs, a peak and a protected area

The Banichkite Springs are located right by Kirkovo, in the Kukulya area. A 1 km route from the center leads to them. You can combine the visit with the old Roman bridge. If you would like to include a historic destination as well as the springs, this combination gives you a concrete starting point for planning.

A 6 km route from Podkova and Stareyshino leads to Punar Kaya. In terms of distance, this means you can compare the 1 km route from the center to the springs with the 6 km route to Punar Kaya. The route to the springs is the shorter of the two options; Punar Kaya is the destination of the longer route.

A route from Kirkovo via Chakalarovo leads to Veykata Peak. Damla Kaya is also suitable for hiking. These places offer further options for choosing a route based on your preferred hiking destination, rather than only the two routes with specified distances.

Mountain and forest landscapes

Veykata Peak is 1,463 m high and is considered Bulgaria's southernmost point. If you are choosing a peak based on its height and a distinctive geographical feature, you will find both here. The route from Kirkovo via Chakalarovo leads to this peak.

Gyumyurdzhinski Snezhnik offers a different natural focus: the protected area contains primary maple, beech and beech-fir forests that are more than 150 years old. A route from the Kirkovo area leads into the protected area. Unlike the peak, the focus here is on ancient forest communities and a protected landscape.

The plant life of the area includes the Rhodope lily. It is seasonal, and sightings are not guaranteed. The golden eagle is also part of the protected area's fauna; sightings are not guaranteed either. The nature experiences therefore differ: Veykata Peak is known for its height and geographical distinction, while Gyumyurdzhinski Snezhnik is about forests, flora and fauna.

Cultural and protected sites

Punar Kaya is a domed tomb near Stareyshino. According to local beliefs, healing properties are attributed to the site and its spring water. This destination thus combines a specific structure with a local belief.

Gaba near Benkovski is a protected rock formation and natural landmark. Punar Kaya and Gaba therefore appeal to different interests: local tradition at the domed tomb and a protected rocky landscape. When choosing between them, you can consider whether you would prefer to visit a place with cultural significance or a distinctive natural formation. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
