Kovachevitsa is defined by its cobbled lanes and house architecture; trails from here also lead into the surrounding area. For planning, the time frame is especially useful: alongside walks through the historical reserve, the Kaninska Eco Trail offers hiking options lasting from two to ten hours.

Houses and History

Kovachevitsa lies in the western Rhodopes. The village was founded after 1656 amid population movements linked to attempts to convert the Bulgarian population in the Rhodopes to another religion. During the Bulgarian National Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries, Kovachevitsa was an educational center. In 1977, it was declared a historical and architectural reserve.

The reserve includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a monastic school, a secular school, 112 residential buildings, and five farm buildings. Six houses have features of national cultural monuments: Daskalova, Shungureva, Dishlyanova, Shimerovi, Bangova, and Pilareva. Typical 18th-century houses have two or three floors and projecting upper stories. The Kovachevitsa house type is a southern Bulgarian sub-type of the Rhodope house, with two to four stories.

The Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1847; in 1900, it received a four-story bell tower. The narrow cobbled streets also offer a way to explore the village on foot. Walks through the historical reserve, accompanied by a themed talk, are offered year-round; there is also an opportunity to visit art galleries. Check current offerings before making plans.

Walks and Hiking Trails

The Kaninska Eco Trail is 13 kilometers long and passes through forested and rocky terrain as well as river habitats. Rare plant and animal species are associated with the route. The long loop runs from Kovachevitsa via Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo and back to Kovachevitsa. One section connects Skrebatno to Kovachevitsa via the first bridge over the Kanina River; another leads from Kovachevitsa through the Rizzova Dupka underground passage to Gorno Dryanovo.

Hikes on the Kaninska Eco Trail are offered in time options ranging from two to ten hours. The suitable route therefore also depends on how much time you would like to set aside. Weather and trail conditions may affect the options; check local conditions before setting out.

In the wider destination of Garmen, a one-hour walk from Kovachevitsa leads west to the Siniya Vir waterfall. This time estimate distinguishes the walk from the two-to-ten-hour options on the Kaninska Eco Trail. This makes it possible to choose between a shorter walk to the waterfall and the longer hiking options.

Surroundings and Practical Information

The Tumnata Gora Nature Reserve is nearby, 16 kilometers from Kovachevitsa, at an elevation of 1,400 to 1,600 meters along the upper Kanina River. Kozi Kamak, a rock sanctuary complex, lies 14 kilometers northeast of Kovachevitsa. Both places broaden the view beyond the houses and lanes of the reserve, although they are different kinds of destinations: one is a nature reserve, the other an archaeological rock complex.

A bivouac site on the road to Siniya Vir is more than 500 meters from Kovachevitsa. It has a shelter, tables, benches, and fire pits, as well as space for picnics or tents. Facilities and access may change; check local conditions before planning to use the site.

Bulgarian Cuisine

You can also try traditional Bulgarian dishes in Kovachevitsa. What is available depends on the restaurant and the season. Consider this possible culinary addition when planning, without assuming a particular dish or year-round availability.
