São Félix do Tocantins combines a religious festival with clearly defined dates and experiences in nature and culture across the municipality. You can choose different priorities when planning your trip: time your visit to coincide with the festival days, or focus on the river landscape, protected areas and local culture. The individual places and traditions show how these priorities differ.

Festival days and religious tradition

In São Félix do Tocantins, Nossa Senhora Imaculada Conceição is honored as the patron saint on December 8. The festivities take place every year from November 29 to December 8. This period gives trip planning a specific seasonal reference point. If you would like to combine your visit with the celebrations, confirm the dates for the relevant year before making your plans.

River landscapes and natural areas in the municipality

The municipality’s recreational areas include Praia Rica and Praia do Alecrim, both on the banks of the Rio Soninho (Sono). Another river encounter is the confluence of the Rio Sono and Rio Novo, which is also listed among the municipality’s recreational areas. Praia do Arapuá is another recreational area. Together, these places offer different connections to rivers and riverbanks without being conflated into a single location.

Waterfalls also shape the choice of nature destinations: Cachoeira da Jalapinha is one of the municipality’s recreational areas; Cachoeira do Prata and Cachoeira das Araras are among its attractions. The Cânions e Corredeiras do Rio Sono is also listed as an attraction in the municipality. These names provide an overview of different natural features—from riverbanks to waterfalls and canyons.

The Monumento Natural Canyons e Corredeiras do Rio Sono was established by Decree No. 034/2012 of July 2, 2012, and lies entirely within the municipality of São Félix do Tocantins. Its objectives include promoting and regulating the ecotourism and scenic potential of the Rio Soninho, as well as protecting and restoring the landscape and natural remnants within the area. The protected area thus combines natural heritage with explicitly stated conservation and landscape objectives.

Another protected area is the RPPN Catedral do Jalapão, a private protected area preserving a rocky natural heritage site in the municipality. Its rock formation resembles a cathedral. The RPPN covers 325 hectares of protected land. The stated priorities of the two protected areas differ: the Monumento Natural also aims to protect and restore the landscape, while the Catedral do Jalapão is named for its distinctive rock formation.

Spring pools and rural setting

Fervedouro do Alecrim is a warm, bubbling spring pool. Its water comes from springs that emerge through the sand; the pool is located near the administrative center of São Félix do Tocantins. Fervedouro Bela Vista has a different location: it is at Chácara Bela Vista in the municipality’s rural area. If you are planning a visit, check local access information in advance, as it may change.

Quilombola culture and Capim-dourado crafts

The municipality’s cultural history offers another distinct focus. Povoado do Prata is considered a remnant of Quilombola communities; visitors can experience the local culture firsthand there. Prata is the only Quilombola community in the municipality of São Félix do Tocantins certified by the Fundação Cultural Palmares under Ordinance No. 02/2006. These two aspects—the cultural heritage of the settlement and the community’s certification—give the place particular cultural significance.

Another tradition is the processing of Capim-dourado. The material is harvested once a year from the municipality’s veredas and made into bags, hats, belts, placemats, headbands, mandalas and boxes. The Associação Comunitária dos Extrativistas, Artesãos e Pequenos Produtores do Povoado do Prata supports the production and marketing of crafts made from Capim-dourado and Buriti. You can learn about the destination’s craft tradition through both the materials and the products, as well as the association in Povoado do Prata.
