The Rio Javaés offers opportunities for sport fishing, boat trips and swimming in clear water within the municipality of Pium. In Pium itself, a monument at the town entrance commemorates figures from Tocantins history; the patron saint is celebrated every year on July 16. The river landscape and culture add distinct touches to your travel plans.

River and Nature in the Municipality

The Rio Javaés is an important tributary of the Rio Araguaia and flows through the municipality of Pium. The river offers opportunities for sport fishing, boat trips and swimming in its clear water. There are different ways to spend time on the Javaés: on the water, fishing or swimming.

The three separate lakes, Lagoa Azul, Lagoa da Pedra and Lagoa Bonita, are considered important natural attractions within the municipality. They complement the Rio Javaés with other named nature destinations. When planning, it is worth considering the river and the lakes as separate places within the municipality, rather than inferring a connected route from their being mentioned together.

Culture, Monuments and Festival Dates

At the entrance to Pium, just beyond the Portal da Cidade, stands the “Monumento em Homenagem aos Precursores e ao Fundador do Estado do Tocantins” (“Monument in Honor of the Pioneers and the Founder of the State of Tocantins”). Its bronze statues depict Teotônio Segurado, Trajano Coelho Neto and former governor Siqueira Campos. The dedication links the monument to the history of the state; the people depicted make that connection tangible.

Nossa Senhora do Carmo is the patron saint of the city of Pium. Festivities are held in her honor every year on July 16. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the program in advance. Rodeo festivities are also held annually in the municipality of Pium; confirm the specific dates locally for your travel period as well.

A past edition of CarnaPium took place from February 14 to 17, 2026, at the Espaço de Eventos de Pium and was open to the public. The festival was part of the municipal cultural calendar. Local, regional and national attractions were planned for this edition to promote culture and offer leisure activities to residents and visitors. If you are traveling in another year, check the event dates announced for that year.

A stop on Sábado Cultural also took place in the municipality of Pium: in December 2021, Praça dos Garimpeiros was decorated with Christmas motifs. The event program there included a stage for performances, a dance floor and stalls selling typical foods.

Another cultural reference is the traditional Hetohoky of the Iny-Karajá people. In March 2026, the ritual took place, among other locations, in Aldeia Macaúba on Ilha do Bananal, within the municipality of Pium. For young people on the threshold of adulthood, Hetohoky is considered the Iny’s most important rite of passage. Thousands of Indigenous community members gathered for this event. Handicrafts made from rock crystal are also among the municipality’s cultural attractions.

A More Distant Nature Destination

An older planning document describes trails and opportunities for photo safaris at Lago do Mato Verde. The lake is 130 km from Pium. The document gives seasonal access options: in summer, travel by car along the unpaved TO-354, and in winter, travel by boat via the Rio Javaés. Given the distance and the different seasonal route descriptions, Lago do Mato Verde is a separate planning consideration. Before setting out, check whether the route described is suitable for your travel dates.
