More than 20 sacred images were destroyed in a fire at Matriz Santo Antonio on October 11, 1929. Alongside this church history, the pilgrimage tradition, other religious sites and terracotta ceramics give Tambaú a range of cultural points of interest. You can get to know the town through specific historical events, places of faith and handcrafted products.
Places of Faith and Pilgrimage Tradition
The Caminho da Fé is one of Tambaú’s leading tourist attractions for adventure and pilgrimage tourism. Hundreds of pilgrims travel along routes between towns in Minas Gerais and São Paulo. This makes the pilgrimage tradition a distinct area of interest: it concerns routes between the two states, while individual religious sites offer specific connections to faith and remembrance.
The Santuário de Nossa Senhora Aparecida preserves the mortal remains of Blessed Donizetti Tavares de Lima in a shrine. The Mausoléu Padre Donizetti offers visitors a different, specific point of connection: tourists and pilgrims come there to fulfill their vows. Check the mausoleum’s current visitor arrangements before your visit.
Churches, Monument and Historical Traces
Matriz Santo Antonio is dedicated to Tambaú’s patron saint. The fire on October 11, 1929, in which more than 20 sacred images were destroyed, is a distinct historical reference point in the church’s history. Its dedication and the fire speak to different aspects of that history: its religious significance and a specific event.
The Estátua Padre Donizetti is located at the Terminal Turístico. It is 8.00 meters high and has a base area of 6.25 m². These two figures describe different measurements—height and base area—and give you a concrete idea of the monument’s dimensions.
The replica of the Igreja de São José was inaugurated in its first construction phase in June 2001. It is located on Avenida Angelina Lepri Biasoli, opposite the Cemitério Municipal in Tambaú. Another religious site is the Gruta de São José Operário: it was inaugurated on June 13, 2019, in the Parque Turístico e de Lazer do Trabalhador and contains stones from the foundations of the Igreja de Santo Antonio.
Leisure, Ceramics and Planning Your Visit
The Parque Turístico e de Lazer do Trabalhador has facilities for sports and leisure, including an outdoor fitness area, beach volleyball, skateboarding and a walking path. These amenities give the park a different focus from the religious and historical sites. If you are planning around a particular facility, check its availability before your visit.
Terracotta ceramics are also one of Tambaú’s distinctive attractions: more than 15 craft workshops serve tourists and produce items including vases and rosettes. These products give a tangible sense of the town’s craft tradition. If you are considering visiting a workshop, check its opening hours in advance.
The Fonte Luminosa is located in Praça Santo Antônio in the center of Tambaú. Its automatic operation is scheduled for 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 4:00 to 11:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The hours vary by day of the week; check them in advance if visiting the fountain is important to your plans.
