São José Dos Campos can be explored through a range of interests: expansive parks, a historic architectural complex, and collections devoted to aviation and the folklore of the Vale do Paraíba. The city offers very different ways to discover these themes.

Parks: Size, Vegetation and Walks

Parque Municipal Roberto Burle Marx, known as Parque da Cidade, covers about one million square meters. Its paths take you through dense vegetation featuring native and exotic species; a diverse range of wildlife also lives there. The paths and the surrounding plant life together shape the character of this park.

Parque Vicentina Aranha also offers walks, but on a different scale: its extensive wooded area covers 43,887.90 m² and is home to rare and centuries-old tree species. When comparing the areas, it is important to note what each figure refers to: the approximately one million square meters refers to Parque da Cidade as a whole, while the 43,887.90 m² refers to the wooded area within Parque Vicentina Aranha. The figures therefore describe different areas.

Parque Santos Dumont is located in the central part of the city. It has a walking path and features a replica of the 14 Bis aircraft. The aviation exhibit may be undergoing maintenance or temporarily relocated; the condition of the walking path may also change. If either of these features is important to your visit, check the latest status in advance. Parque Alberto Simões has two zip lines. Their operating availability may change, so it is worth checking current status if you plan to use them.

Architecture, Aviation and Regional Culture

Parque Vicentina Aranha is not only a place for walks but also a cultural heritage site in the city. It is protected as a preservation area under Municipal Law No. 4928/96 and also by CONDEPHAAT under Resolution SC-44 of July 25, 2001. The former Sanatório Vicentina Aranha is an architectural complex considered one of the most significant buildings from the Latin American sanatorium era. Walking and architectural history come together here, without either aspect being reduced to the other.

Opened in 2004, the Memorial Aeroespacial Brasileiro preserves the history and achievements of DCTA and ITA, the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica. Its collection covers education, aviation, defense, space, and related research. Its extensive holdings include aircraft, simulators, and satellite components. One highlight of the visit is the VLS-1 rocket, short for Veículo Lançador de Satélites: developed by DCTA, it is considered a symbol of the country’s space development. The memorial thus offers a technical and institutional perspective on the history of aviation and space exploration.

The Museu do Folclore focuses on a different subject. Its collections and exhibitions explore the folklore of the Vale do Paraíba. Those wishing to focus on regional forms of expression rather than aviation and space will find a distinct cultural theme here. Together, these collections show that cultural interests in São José Dos Campos can take different directions.

Choose a Focus for Your Stay

These places offer specific, distinct themes, but no prescribed visiting sequence. If you would like to combine several interests, it helps to note your personal priorities and check the current availability of individual activities, such as the zip lines.
