The Pedra do Baú rock complex defines the natural side of São Bento do Sapucaí; churches, museums, mosaics and handicrafts offer a different perspective on the town. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on rock trails, cultural attractions or both.

Pedra do Baú and hiking trails

Pedra do Baú is a state natural monument within the Sapucaí-Mirim Environmental Protection Area. The rock complex in São Bento do Sapucaí includes Baú, Bauzinho and Ana Chata. MONA Pedra do Baú is located in the Atlantic Forest and encompasses high-altitude vegetation and diverse fauna.

The Trilha do Baú is a self-guided, difficult route covering 3 to 4 kilometers through mixed ombrophilous forest. Access is via the MONA Pedra do Baú visitor center. The Trilha da Ana Chata is 1,830 meters long and takes about an hour. Stairs carved into the rock lead through a short rock tunnel at the beginning of the trail and on to the summit.

The rock complex itself also offers various options for climbing enthusiasts: there are at least 30 climbing routes with varying technical difficulty levels, lengths and elevations. If you have your eye on Bauzinho, you should know that it is possible to walk to its summit.

Culture, history and handicrafts

The Igreja da Imaculada Conceição is located in Bairro do Quilombo. Dating back to 1805, it was built from adobe. The municipal Museu do Zé Pereira is located in the Mercado Municipal. It opened on January 25, 2020, and has three permanent exhibition rooms about the history of cultural tradition in Brazil and its special relationship with São Bento do Sapucaí. The century-old giant figures of Bloco Zé Pereira are part of the town’s cultural and historical heritage and are associated with Carnival.

Handicrafts are represented by various initiatives with distinct profiles. The Arte no Quilombo association has more than 80 members and is known in the town and region for handicrafts made from banana and corn husks, bamboo, costumes and other materials. Arteben – Casa do Artesão brings together work by 60 local artisans from different neighborhoods. Materials used include corn husks, coffee filters, crochet, wood and biscuit dough; souvenirs from the town are also available there.

Another attraction is the Capelinha de Mosaico, created through a mosaic installation by Ângelo Milani and Claudia Villar. For a walk featuring mosaics, the Roteiro de Mosaicos starts in the town center and is rated easy. The MuMan audio guide also takes visitors through the center: it starts at Praça General Marcondes Salgado at “Marco Zero” and ends there as well.

Other cultural venues offer their own distinctive features. At Ateliê Ditinho Joana, sculptures continue to be created together with his three sons. Their subjects include people from rural areas, modern-day occupations, saints, objects and symbols. Espaço de Leitura e Arte “Eugênia Sereno” is housed in an 1870 mansion. Literary soirées, film screenings and cultural events there promote reading in dialogue with all the arts.

More activities and getting there

For a different kind of exercise, the Trilha da Divisa cycling route winds between araucaria trees and hydrangeas; it starts and ends at Cachoeira do Tobogã. BOTÂNICA Mantiqueira, in Bairro do Serrano, invites visitors to stroll among small plantings of aromatic plants. In Bairro do Cantagalo, guides are available to accompany visitors on hikes and excursions.

São Bento do Sapucaí can be reached via two intercity bus lines: Pássaro Marron and Expresso Gardênia. If you plan to travel by bus, check the schedule before setting off. You can then use your planned priorities to choose a hotel: rock trails, attractions in the center, or a trip that combines interests in nature and culture.
