In Piraju, the rapids of the Rio Paranapanema give your trip a clear focus: viewpoints, a wooden boardwalk and canoeing come together with a central riverside park and historic sites. You can plan your stay around your own interests, with the river landscape, the city and its culture offering different perspectives on the destination.
Views and trails along the Paranapanema
The Mirante da Ponte at the Ponte Engenheiro Nelson de Godoy offers views of the rapids of the Rio Paranapanema. For a different perspective, take the Trilha das Corredeiras in Parque FECAPI: the 800-metre wooden boardwalk runs alongside the Paranapanema rapids. From its viewing platforms, you can look out over the water and surrounding nature. Here, the focus is not only on a single viewpoint, but also on the path along the river.
The Trilha das Corredeiras is accessible throughout its entire length. As operational details may change, it is advisable to check the conditions before your visit. For a different kind of riverside experience, Parque das Águas is a city park with facilities on the banks of the Rio Paranapanema in central Piraju. It is a distinct urban landmark, separate from the boardwalk in Parque FECAPI.
The wider landscape of the broader Piraju destination also includes an approximately eight-kilometre stretch of the Rio Paranapanema’s longest natural course. It lies between the mouths of the Ribeirão Hungria and Ribeirão das Araras and was placed under municipal protection in 2002.
Canoeing and activities on the river
Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are available on the Rio Paranapanema in Piraju. Parque FECAPI is also home to a municipal canoeing school and the municipal slalom canoe training centre. The Escola Municipal de Canoagem Slalom is located at Garganta do Diabo, among the rapids of the Rio Paranapanema; its natural course is considered the best in the Americas. The school also currently uses Salto Dr. Simão, at the start of the rapids.
At Salto Piraju in Parque FECAPI, rafting, Boia Cross and canoe slalom are available in the broader Piraju destination. Salto runs parallel to Garganta do Diabo among the rapids of the Rio Paranapanema, within the broader Piraju destination. Operators and schedules for these activities may change, so check the details before making plans. The different listings show various sides of water sports, but do not guarantee that every activity is available at all times.
City park, squares and practical information
Praça Ataliba Leonel has a bandstand for performances and is listed in protection order No. 02/96. The square is also home to the approximately eight-metre-high public Monumento do Peixe Dourado, a symbol of Piraju. To get your bearings locally, visit the Posto de Informações Turísticas at kiosk 04 in Parque FECAPI. It is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00; if you plan to stop there, check the hours in advance.
Culture in the broader Piraju destination
The broader Piraju destination offers other cultural and landscape attractions. The Caminho das Águas starts in Piraju and runs for 107 kilometres; the route can be walked by athletes or pilgrims. For a historical perspective, visit the Antiga Estação Ferroviária, a heritage-listed architectural complex in the Vila Tibiriçá do Paranapanema district. It belongs to the municipal government and is protected under Piraju’s historical, artistic, landscape and cultural heritage designation. Ramos de Azevedo designed the main building; the railway branch housed there opened in 1908 and closed in 1966.
The Museu Histórico de Piraju „Constantino Leman“ is housed in the old railway station’s halls. Its exhibits include items used during the construction of the UHE-Paranapanema dam, as well as historical photographs and documents from the city. The Igreja Matriz da Paróquia São Sebastião on Praça Ataliba Leonel also brings architecture and history together: it was built in the Gothic style between 1933 and 1954. The church displays a Baroque wooden statue of Saint Sebastian, brought from Italy and dating from between 1600 and 1700. Casa da USP em Piraju hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions dedicated to the region and Brazil.
For local produce and handicrafts, Feira da Lua is another place to visit in the Piraju destination. It takes place on Wednesdays from 15:00 to 22:00 at Praça Ataliba Leonel and features food stalls, produce from farmers, local handicrafts and children’s games. Check the current date before your trip. Moçambique adds to the cultural scene as a religious folk dance of African origin that was brought to Piraju in the 1930s.
