Pilar do Sul combines its location among rivers and valleys with nature, water sports, history and regional cuisine. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your trip: wildlife watching in Parque Natural da Água Santa, activities at Represa Paineiras, or a glimpse of campeira culture and local food traditions.

Nature and Wildlife Watching

Nature attractions include reserves in the Atlantic Forest that remain relatively undeveloped. Parque Natural da Água Santa has trails where you can watch birds and small animals. The nature focus therefore ranges from forest reserves to wildlife watching in the park. If you plan to visit the park, it is advisable to check current access options in advance.

Water Sports and Rural Trails

Represa Paineiras is formed by the Turvo and Bonito rivers and is associated with jet skiing, kayaking and sailing; sport fishing is also available. In the rural areas of Lavrinha and Moquém, there are trails for 4x4 driving and trekking. This lets you distinguish between water-based activities and activities on rural trails: the former are tied to the reservoir, while the latter take place in the two rural areas. This is a clear difference in the type of experience and can help determine your focus.

Traditions and Local History

Pilar do Sul preserves traditions passed down by miners and traveling tropeiros; the area is also regionally shaped by campeira activities. Its history also refers to tropeiros: in the 18th century, Pilar do Sul was a route used by tropeiros, traveling cattle drovers. Igreja Matriz Bom Jesus do Bonfim was built in 1895. These provide two distinct historical reference points: the tropeiro route in the 18th century and the church’s construction in the late 19th century.

Regional Cuisine and Events

There is also a specific local culinary specialty: paçoca de carne with banana is a typical dish served at several restaurants in Pilar do Sul. Availability may vary by restaurant; if you specifically want to try it, ask in advance. A clearly dated example of the combination of gastronomy and culture was the 2nd Winter Gastronomy Festival. It took place from July 17 to 19, 2026, at Praça Central and featured gastronomy, music and culture. Participating businesses offered a variety of dishes, and a gastronomic competition was also part of the event. The 27th FEAPS, the Pilar do Sul Agricultural Fair, was also scheduled for 2026. As an agricultural fair, it offers a different focus from the winter festival.
