Peruíbe combines an extensive coastline with protected landscapes and historic sites. Praia de Peruíbe stretches for 13,394 meters from Praia do Tapirema to the mouth of the Rio Preto. Other beaches are distinguished by their location within the Estação Ecológica Juréia-Itatins, a natural rock platform or opportunities for water sports. The town is also home to the ruins of Abarebebê and the Museu Histórico e Arqueológico de Peruíbe.

Beaches, protected areas and activities

Praia de Peruíbe is located in central Peruíbe and is suitable for running, cycling and surfing. Its length and named endpoints provide clear geographical reference points, while specific beach activities are also available here. Visitors exploring the coast for leisure opportunities will therefore find different points of interest at this beach than at stretches where the landscape and protected-area status take center stage.

Praia da Barra do Una is located within the Estação Ecológica Juréia-Itatins. Its landscape includes mangroves, forest, restinga, floodplains and dunes. Praia do Caramborê is also within the ecological station and is about 550 meters long. The descriptions of the two beaches emphasize different features: Barra do Una is noted for its range of ecosystems, while Caramborê is described in terms of the approximate length of its coastal stretch.

Prainha offers panoramic views of rocky coastlines and islands. It also has a natural fishing platform, formed by a rocky outcrop that extends about 800 meters into the sea. Ecological excursions, surfing and water sports are available at Praia do Guaraú and the port of the Rio Guaraú. These coastal spots thus differ both in their landscape features and in the activities associated with them.

Parque Estadual do Itinguçu adds a broader geographical perspective. The park is located in the municipalities of Peruíbe and Iguape and covers 5,040 hectares. Its area and location across two municipalities offer a different perspective on nature than the information about individual beaches: here the focus is on a protected area, while there it is on specific stretches of coastline.

Cultural history in Peruíbe

The Museu Histórico e Arqueológico de Peruíbe is housed in a former railway station building and has an archaeological collection. The museum presents the settlement history of the Juréia region, from the sambaquis through Indigenous culture to colonization. This puts a longer historical sequence at the center, complemented by the archaeological collection and the distinctive setting in a former railway station building.

The ruins of Abarebebê are located in Convento Velho, eight kilometers from downtown Peruíbe, and can be reached via Avenida Padre Anchieta. They were built in the second half of the 16th century to catechize the Tupi who lived in the region at the time. The ruins are historic heritage at both the national and São Paulo state levels; in 1984, IPHAN and CONDEPHAAT designated them as protected monuments.

The cultural sites have different points of emphasis: the museum presents the settlement history of the Juréia region in a sequence from the sambaquis to colonization. The ruins, by contrast, are notable for the construction period, purpose and heritage protection of a specific historic site. Along the coast, beach length, activities, protected ecosystems and individual natural features offer different ways to explore Peruíbe.
