Mococa offers several distinct ways to explore art, religious heritage and agriculture: the life story of Bruno Giorgi, museum collections at Casa de Cultura Rogério Cardoso, the history of the Museu de Arte Sacra and a church designed in the neo-Gothic style. Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza, meanwhile, represents sustainable organic agriculture and coffee as a field of study. The museums explore biographies, collections and the city’s history; the farm provides a distinct agricultural focus.
Art and Collections in Mococa
The Sala Especial Bruno Giorgi offers insights into the life and work of the artist, who was born in Mococa on August 13, 1905. A long-running exhibition gives his biography its own place among the city’s cultural themes. This personal perspective differs from collections that bring together institutional or religious history: here, the focus is on one artist and his work.
The Museu de Arte Sacra “Iria Josepha da Silva” was established after the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário was designated a historic landmark of the city on April 28, 1982. The museum was inaugurated on October 11, 1986. The two dates mark different steps: first, the church was protected as a historic landmark; later, the museum was inaugurated.
The Museu Histórico de Mococa Professor Carlos Alberto Paladini was established in 1961 as the Museu Histórico e Pedagógico “Marques de Três Rios.” It was founded under State Decree No. 38.628 of June 19, 1961. Today, the museum is housed in Casa de Cultura Rogério Cardoso, which has an exhibition room displaying objects and furniture from its collection. The Casa also houses collections from the Museu de Artes Plásticas “Quirino da Silva,” the Museu Histórico de Mococa “Professor Carlos Alberto Paladini” and the Museu de Arte Sacra “Iria Josepha.” The building was constructed in 1929 by Italian architect Lorenzo Paroli. Its cultural activities also include art workshops and classes.
Church Architecture and Local Tradition
The Igreja Matriz de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo is laid out in the shape of a Latin cross and designed in the neo-Gothic style. During its construction in 1896, painter Elia Napoli created the artistic ceiling paintings in oil tempera. This makes it possible to distinguish two specific aspects of the church: its architectural form and the ceiling paintings created for the building.
The Festa do Padroeiro is another expression of community culture and an ongoing local tradition. In addition to the novena and solemn Mass, a procession passes through the streets of the city center.
Agriculture and Coffee
Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza has been owned by the Barretto family since 1850 and is a model of sustainable organic agriculture. It is also a coffee study center. The farm thus brings together two distinct aspects: its long history of ownership and its present-day description as an agricultural model with a focus on coffee. These themes complement Mococa’s history of art and collections with a rural focus.
