Indiaporã brings together historical collections and rural culture with landscapes along the Rio Grande. The museum, square, rural cuisine, festivals and nature each offer a different perspective. When planning your trip, consider whether you would rather devote your time to local history, a tasting by appointment, or trails and scenery.

Local History in the Museum, House and Architecture

The Museu Histórico presents Indiaporã’s history in themed rooms. Its collection ranges from trophies to archaeological artifacts from Indigenous civilizations that lived along the Rio Grande in the municipality. A large mural of relief sculptures on the museum’s façade depicts important historical events from Indiaporã. The collection and the mural offer different perspectives: one presents history arranged by theme, while the other depicts it on the exterior façade.

The Church of São João Batista, on Praça Luiz Antônio Amorim, is dedicated to the municipality’s patron saint. Its central tower features a clock and decorative elements. Praça Luiz Antônio Amorim is also called Praça Matriz and is considered a tourist attraction for its beauty. The church and square add a distinct architectural focal point to the area’s historical themes.

Casa do Sertanejo recreates the home of a rural worker from the era before electricity and modern technology, and is furnished with traditional tools and equipment. Unlike the collection at the Museu Histórico, it conveys rural life through a recreated domestic setting. Casa do Sertanejo also offers tastings of homemade, typical rural specialties; advance arrangements are required.

Festivals and Rural Cuisine

The Festa do Milho Verde is associated with March and the Recinto João Scatolin. It includes a lunch of rural dishes, as well as stalls selling sweets, savory foods and desserts made with green corn. At the Festa das Nações in early December, typical dishes from different countries take center stage at stalls run by clubs, schools and churches; traditional dances and artistic performances round out the program. The two festivals showcase food in different ways: one focuses on green corn and rural dishes, the other on foods from different countries and performances. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific event date in advance.

The Recinto de Exposições has a capacity of 12,000 people. Its themed areas feature giant sculptures inspired by country culture, including a hat, a set of spurs and tin horns. These oversized motifs give the venue a distinct country feel.

Scenery and Nature Experiences

The Rio Grande borders Indiaporã for long stretches, creating opportunities for ecotourism and water sports. Native forests line the shores of the reservoir in Indiaporã, protecting the shoreline and natural resources. The river connection is reflected both in the activities mentioned and in the landscape of the reservoir’s wooded shores.

Ilha do Picó has walking trails and a viewpoint for watching the sunset. Two different aspects of nature come together here: walking the trails and taking in the evening light from the viewpoint. Cachoeirinha offers visitors a nature experience with a close connection to the natural surroundings.

Cachoeira da Jandaia lies on the border between the municipalities of Indiaporã and Ouroeste. It is catalogued by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico, Artístico Nacional (IPHAN), the Brazilian institute for historical, artistic and national heritage. This makes it a distinct cultural and natural attraction alongside the trails, viewpoints and waterways.

Plan Your Travel Dates and Accommodation Search

If you plan to attend a festival, you will need to check the specific dates; tastings at Casa do Sertanejo require advance arrangements. If you are focusing on nature, you could consider the trails, the sunset viewpoint on Ilha do Picó and the water sports opportunities on the Rio Grande.
