The historic center of Iguape is a key destination for a trip focused on heritage and local culture. It is the first urban site in the state of São Paulo to be protected by Iphan as a cultural landscape. It also includes the state’s largest preserved collection of mansions, including buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Cultural venues and local products

The permanent exhibition at the Museu Municipal de Iguape is titled “Iguape – culturas, memórias e territórios.” Check before your visit whether it is still on display. The Casa do Fandango Iguapense is in the historic center; visitors can find exhibitions, a library and a video library there. This gives you a choice of different cultural stops: an exhibition at the museum, as well as exhibition and media offerings at the Casa do Fandango.

Handicrafts are sold and tourist information is available at Avenida Princesa Isabel 708 in the center of Iguape. If you are interested in local products, you can also plan a visit to the Feira do Produtor Rural. It provides an opportunity to meet local producers directly and offers items including Bolo de Roda, Biju, Bolinho de Coruja and Farinha Manema. The event takes place at Praça da Liberdade in the historic center and on Rua Porto General Câmara in Iguape. As products and market arrangements can change, check what is currently on offer before your visit.

Leisure and recreation

Orla do Valo Grande offers a different focus from the cultural venues. It has outdoor exercise equipment, a playground and accessible ramps. A floating pier supports water activities and fishing. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider leisure by the water alongside historical and cultural interests. Facilities may change; check before your visit whether the amenities you are interested in are available.

Nature activities in the wider Iguape destination

Iguape is part of the Lagamar tourism region. In the wider Iguape destination, the Museu a Céu Aberto walking tour is an easy route on foot; depending on how much time you have, it takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours. The Trilha das Ruínas do Itaguá starts at Caverna do Ódio and follows Mar Pequeno through mangroves, hillside forest and a natural bamboo tunnel. It is an easy trail, 1.5 kilometers long. These details offer different ways to plan: for the walking tour, the approximate duration is most relevant; for the Trilha, it is the route length.

Praia da Juréia is also part of the wider Iguape destination. The beach in the Barra do Ribeira neighborhood is 19 kilometers long and is suitable for beach walks, surfing and family recreation. It can be reached by ferry between Iguape and Jureia; check the schedule before traveling.
