Franca can be explored through a range of themes: the city is known for its shoe history, offers distinctive cultural sites, and combines leisure activities with natural areas. You can tailor your stay to the interests that appeal to you most—from historic buildings to trails through native forest.

Shoe History in Franca

Franca is known as the “Men’s Shoe Capital.” Data from 2020 lists about 100 shoe factories in the city. The Museu do Calçado de Franca was founded to preserve the history, memory and culture of local shoe production. When it opened, it held more than 3,000 objects relating to the history of footwear: shoes from different periods, tools, documents and photographs. Alongside the city’s industrial identity, the museum also highlights the heritage of shoemaking.

Cultural Sites Between Architecture and the Performing Arts

A distinctive historic monument is the Relógio do Sol de Franca sundial. The French Capuchin friar Frei Germano de Annecy built it between 1886 and 1887; it was designed to tell the hours of the day. Only a few examples of this type exist worldwide. The other one mentioned here is in Annecy, France—a notable connection if you are interested in the monument’s history.

The Fonte Luminosa de Franca stands in Praça Nossa Senhora da Conceição in the city center. Its sculpture depicts four female figures representing the four seasons. The Sé Catedral Nossa Senhora da Conceição also shapes the city’s religious and architectural character: it is the seat of the Diocese of Franca and combines eclectic architecture with Gothic and Neoclassical influences.

For the performing arts, Teatro Municipal José Cyrino Goulart hosts theater, music and dance performances. It is considered Franca’s most important cultural venue and the region’s only theater. Another place to visit is Casa da Cultura e do Artista Francano, a public venue where artists exhibit their work and art enthusiasts can view it. It is home to, among other institutions, MIS (Museu da Imagem e do Som), the Pinacoteca Municipal “Miguel Ângelo Pucci,” the Academia Francana de Letras, Ateliê Bonaventura Cariolato and the Memorial da Resistência Negra.

Nature Trails and Outdoor Recreation

At Parque dos Trabalhadores, marked trails stretching more than six kilometers wind through native forest and are suitable for walking or cycling. The park also has sand courts for volleyball and beach tennis, a soccer field, restrooms and changing rooms. The trails and sports facilities make the park a different kind of destination from the cultural sites in the city. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check for current information before visiting.

Jardim Zoobotânico de Franca has a distinct focus: its offerings include nature trails, plant nurseries, places to relax and projects to protect wildlife and plant life. The meliponary is home to various species of native stingless bees; an aviary is used to rehabilitate wild birds and prepare them for release. The garden also produces seedlings for greening the city and regional reforestation. Here, the focus is not only on nature experiences but also on the care and conservation of plants and animals.

Events, Tradition and Other Interests

Parque de Exposições Fernando Costa combines opportunities for walking, running and picnicking with event and heritage attractions. It hosts agricultural fairs, food fairs and cultural festivals such as the Cavalhadas; visitors can also tour historic listed buildings. If you are planning a visit around a particular event, it is worth checking the relevant dates separately. Historic games, cultural events and competitions are held at Ginásio Poliesportivo “Pedrocão,” attracting fans and visitors of all ages.

Festa Nossa Senhora de Achiropita is also part of local tradition: it has been celebrated every August since 2003. Local nonprofit organizations prepare and sell Italian dishes there; the specific food selection may vary. If you are more interested in shopping than events, Shopping do Calçado de Franca is a shopping center specializing in shoes and clothing.

Another route-related attraction is the Caminho da Fé: Franca is the starting point for a 624-kilometer section. This distance makes it a destination in its own right alongside the city’s individual cultural and natural sites. This offers a variety of ways to plan a stay—from the history of footwear and architecture to events, nature trails and a longer route.
